Dallas Cowboys Injury Update: Latest on Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and Felix Jones

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of big-time injury issues heading into their Monday night contest with the rival Washington Redskins. Four major offensive players are attempting to recover in time, but may not be able to go. Here is the latest on all of them.

Quarterback Tony Romo is slowly recovering from a punctured lung and broken ribs suffered in Week 2. He was limited during practice on Saturday, but the signs point to him starting on Monday night. On Sunday afternoon Romo declared himself ready to play, but he is still listed as questionable.

Romo is almost certain to play, and the Redskins are almost certain to target his injuries. Whether or not it's smart to play with those injuries is a topic for another post, but the Cowboys look ready to allow their franchise quarterback to suit up and play in Week 3.

Both of the Cowboys' top two receivers are working through leg injuries, as Dez Bryant is questionable with a quad and Miles Austin is suffering through a hamstring problem. The latest report has Bryant questionable after he was limited in practice on Saturday. Bryant is expected to at least try to play Monday night, but the news on Austin is far less optimistic.

Austin has now been ruled out of Monday night's game and isn't likely to return before the Cowboys bye in Week 5. Third-year wideout Kevin Ogletree will likely start in his place for the time being. Austin's hamstring is almost certain to be a multi-week injury so Dallas is not counting on him for the next few games. With all the injuries they've been dealing with so far, the Cowboys are almost certain to allow Austin to recover fully before putting him back on the field.

Running back Felix Jones was also limited on Saturday with a shoulder injury, and is listed as questionable for Monday night's contest as well. But barring a major setback, Jones will be active for the game. He is likely to give up some carries to rookie DeMarco Murray, but the fourth-year vet is likely to at least give it a go.

So as it looks right now Romo, Bryant and Jones will all attempt to play against the Redskins, while Austin is likely out a while.

With Washington off to a 2-0 start and sitting on top of the NFC East, the 1-1 Cowboys clearly see this as an important early season test. They will try and get as many injured guys back into the lineup as possible for it.
