UFC 135 Results: 4 Reasons Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson Must Happen

Tim McTiernanSep 25, 2011

If you don't think Jon Jones is good, you're clearly delusional.

Jones was able to defeat Rampage Jackson on Saturday night and he wasn't in trouble once.

This continues his win streak—and the fact that he can say that he's never been in danger in a UFC fight.

Dan Henderson is one win away from getting a crack at Jones and the light heavyweight title. Here are four reasons why this fight needs to happen.

A True Veteran Test

1 of 4

Dan Henderson has been fighting professionally in MMA since 1997. He has been wrestling at a world-class level since 1991.

Henderson won the USA University Greco-Roman Championship the year I was born.

He's been around for a long time.

There are no other light heavyweights who have been around as long as Henderson, and none would provide as much of a veteran test as Hendo would.

Comparable Wrestling

Henderson may not be at his physical peak, but he is still one of the most accomplished wrestlers to ever participate in mixed martial arts.

Even if he doesn't have the same ability that he had years ago, he still has the Greco-Roman knowledge—and that alone may be enough to stop, and maybe even reverse, some of Jones' takedowns.

Another Name to His Resume

3 of 4

This slide could be argued for either fighter.

If Henderson were to win, it would add to his illustrious resume, including names such as Carlos Newton, Gilbert Yvel, Rodrigo Nogueira, Renato Sobral, Renzo Gracie, Murilo Rua, Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva, Rich Franklin, Michael Bisping and Fedor Emelianenko. Wow.

Adding Jon Jones' name to that list, especially when Hendo is past the age of 40, would cement him as one of the top five greatest fighters of all time.

Jon Jones' list would include Hendo, along with Stephan Bonnar, Brandon Vera, Vladimir Matyushenko, Ryan Bader, Mauricio Rua and Quinton Jackson—not nearly the same number of names, but that's impressive for a 23-year-old with 15 professional fights.

Either of these men adding the other's name to his resume would be huge.

A Real Chance for Henderson to Win

4 of 4

Dan Henderson would have a real shot at winning this fight and would pose a very real challenge for Bones.

Hendo has fantastic wrestling to counteract Jones.

Hendo has a solid ground game to get back up.

Hendo has the H-bomb to knock Jones out cold.

Hendo has the experience to take Jones out.

If it is possible to beat Jones, Hendo has as good a chance—if not better—as any fighter in the light heavyweight division.
