Tony Romo Injury: Cowboys' QB Won't Erase Past by Playing Hurt

Andrew KulhaMay 31, 2018

Tony Romo won’t be considered a clutch quarterback until he wins in the playoffs.

He can play hurt all he wants, and he can put up as many stats as he wants during the regular season, but none of that will matter.

In a league that is predicated around “what have you done for me lately?” Romo has failed the Cowboys more times than not.

Perhaps if you are judging based off of regular season wins, regular season stats, and regular season girlfriends than maybe you can build a case for him.

Other than that, it’s hard to back him up.

Unfortunately, in the NFL it’s all about what you do in the postseason, and ultimately it’s how many rings you have on your finger when all is said and done.

Romo just hasn’t shown that he knows how to win when everything is on the line.

Sure, he came up big after being injured against San Francisco, but if greatness was determined by how you play in Week 2, then Joey Harrington or JaMarcus Russell could be considered a great and clutch quarterback.

Romo just can’t get it done when it really matters.

In four postseason games with the Cowboys, Romo has completed 80-of-135 for four touchdowns two interceptions. He's also fumbled it five times.

What makes them worse is the way that they lost the games. Romo fumbled away chance after chance every time he got the Cowboys into the playoffs.

This is a franchise that put enough talent around Romo to win at least one Super Bowl, but he squandered all of their chances leading the Cowboys to a 1-3 postseason record.

To be honest, I’m surprised Romo has lasted as long as he has in Dallas.

Having a star on your helmet and representing America’s team comes with enormous pressure.

When you’re playing well in Dallas it’s usually exaggerated out of proportion, and when you fail it’s bound to come across 10 times worse than it really is.

That’s just the reality of being a member of the Dallas Cowboys, let alone the quarterback.

It’s questionable whether or not Romo will play against the Redskins, but hopefully he won’t play hurt just to prove that he can be a clutch quarterback.

No matter what Romo does during the season it won’t matter.

He needs to go out and win during the postseason in order to be considered clutch.
