Arsenal: Theo Walcott Wrongfully Blames Players for Gunners' Squalor

Kyle VassaloSep 23, 2011

When a team loses in the manner that Arsenal is losing, everyone is to blame. Arsenal's Theo Walcott is placing the blame on the players, rather than the more frequently targeted Arsene Wenger.

While the players should certainly accept some of the responsibility, Wenger and management put the team in a position to fail.

Wenger had a number of opportunities to make moves to improve the overall state of the team, but felt that sticking to his guns, letting talent walk out the door and doing nothing to compensate for it was a better route to go.

To his credit, focusing heavily on developing players within the organization has served Wenger well, but by neglecting the glaring issues, he buried his team before the season even started.

Walcott coming to his manager's aide is admirable. Wenger has taken a ton of heat and clearly it isn't all his fault, but everything starts at the top and his mistakes were the most detrimental to the overall play of the team.

At this point, it's clear Arsenal isn't going to forge a comeback. After showing signs of life, a humiliating loss to Blackburn shows that Arsenal is doomed for mediocrity this season.

Walcott said,

''The boss is a great man, he can deal with anything thrown at him. He's been at the club for over 15 years and so he's not under any pressure at all. Us players, we need to look at ourselves and start doing it on the pitch, to be honest."

Really? He can deal with anything thrown at him? Forget about tenure and what he has meant to Arsenal over the years. None of that is helping Arsenal on the pitch right now.

This is the manager who let losing Cesc Fabregas snowball into a series of crushing losses and sat back and let it all happen.

No, the players aren't performing well enough, but to insinuate that Wenger has nothing to do with the hole they have dug themselves into is far too generous.
