Michael Vick Injury: What the Star QB's Injury Means for Your Fantasy Team

Nicholas GossSep 23, 2011

When Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was seen participating at practice on Thursday, it was clear the star QB was going to be fine for Sunday's game against the New York Giants in the team's home opener, despite suffering a concussion last week against the Atlanta Falcons.

Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was one of the many people who explained that Vick looked fine in practice.

“He looked good, he looked fine,” said Maclin (via Yahoo! Sports). “In control of the huddle, in control of what was going on, in control of the offense. He’s in good shape.”

Eagles Game Plan

With Vick nursing a head injury—and the fact that the Eagles just gave him a new $100 million contract—expect a heavy dose of LeSean McCoy this week against the Giants.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will not want Vick to take too many shots in the pocket or in the open field, so the running game will likely be a major feature of the Eagles offense this week.

McCoy has rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns in two games this season and has caught six passes. He has played great so far, and in four career games against the Giants, McCoy has rushed for 285 yards with two touchdowns.

The Eagles are no doubt worried that Vick is becoming increasingly injury prone. When he does drop back to pass this week, expect McCoy to be involved too.

Quick, short passes to McCoy and speedster DeSean Jackson will likely be the best way for the Eagles to gain positive yards from the passing game against the Giants, who have a weak secondary.

Establishing the run early will also help set up the play-action pass, and receivers Jeremy Maclin and Desean Jackson will certainly turn those opportunities into big-scoring plays.

Fantasy Advice

If you have Vick on your team, don't expect him to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns.

The Eagles will have a lot of running plays for McCoy to thrive in, and any throws Vick does make will be quick ones to avoid the Giants pass rush.

Start Vick as you normally would; he will start against the Giants and will not leave the game unless he suffers another injury or one team is clearly going to win in the fourth quarter.

Expecting Vick to pass for 250 yards with one touchdown is safe, and for most quarterbacks in the NFL, that's a good game.
