Felix Jones Injury: Cowboys Dodge Bullet with Jones' Separated Shoulder

Jun 7, 2018

It's a good thing the Dallas Cowboys managed to pull out a 27-24 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Otherwise, the game would have been an absolute disaster.

This is because the Cowboys suffered way more than their fair share of injuries. Tony Romo's ribs were obviously the focal point, but the team also watched Miles Austin and Felix Jones go down with injuries. Jones' injury sounded like the worst of the bunch, as it was revealed that he had dislocated his right shoulder.

But the news on Monday regarding Jones' shoulder is quite good, as the word from ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins is that Jones "should be OK" for Dallas' home opener against the Washington Redskins next Monday.

If you'll pardon the expression, this is a break for the Cowboys. Despite the fact Jones has not been very productive in the first two weeks of the season, he is still the top guy in Dallas' backfield. They need him to be healthy and active.

Should the Cowboys be at all worried about any lingering pain? Probably, but not to a point where they should consider toning down Jones' workload. He was able to continue playing against the 49ers after getting medical attention, and his injury is coming at a good time seeing as how he has an extra day to heal before the Cowboys take on the Redskins on Monday night.

In fact, the bigger concern for the Cowboys at the moment should be Jones' production. He's carried the ball 26 times so far this year, and has gained a mere 69 yards. That's a 2.7-yard average, and that's just not going to get it done in the long haul.

This is a problem that is going to effect the entire offense. If Jones can't hold up his end of the bargain by picking up yards on the ground, all the pressure is on Dallas' passing attack to get the job done. Seeing as how Romo, Austin and Dez Bryant are all banged up at the moment, that's asking a lot.

Things could certainly be worse, make no mistake about that. But until further notice, things could be better too.
