BCS: The Saga Continues

Joel BarkerNov 23, 2008

It's late November which can only mean two things. Christmas is right around the corner and the BCS has outdone itself yet again.

My hope is that we finally have the one really goofed up BCS scenario that results in change.

President-Elect Obama, whose main message was change, is even trying to get in on the action. Not even he can change the BCS.

But maybe, just maybe, we are on the verge of the perfect BCS storm.

Here's the deal: Currently Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma are all tied atop the Big 12 South Division. If it stays that way the highest ranked Big 12 South team will play in the Big 12 Championship Game. I have no problem with that.

But if Oklahoma loses at Oklahoma State this weekend things could get very interesting. I know the Sooners are coming off of a LARGE win this past weekend. But this weekend is a bitter rivalry and Oklahoma State is no pushover. Throw in the fact that it's at Stillwater and you have an all out war about to take place.

So if Oklahoma State pulls the upset, Texas Tech would then win the Big 12 South, provided the Red Raiders defeat Baylor this weekend.

The problem comes in with Texas currently being ranked second in the BCS. In that case most human voters that actually have a brain would catapult Texas Tech above the Longhorns. Sure, great, fine. But what about the computer element?

See this whole deal makes no sense whatsoever. Even if the Big 12 South finishes with a three-way tie someone is going to get the shaft.

All three of these teams, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech have had tremendous seasons. And to see a few writers, coaches, and a PC with 100 GB of RAM choose their fate is quite a travesty.

It's reasonable to assume that the SEC Champions will be one of the teams in the BCS National Championship Game, unless Florida or Bama stumbles this weekend in their own huge rivalry games.

Whatever happens in the Big 12 should determine the other participant.

But what happens if Oklahoma wins this weekend and ends up second in the BCS leading to the Big 12 Championship Game? Longhorns fans everywhere will cry foul because Texas beat Oklahoma head-to-head.

Now it could really get interesting if Oklahoma were to go to the Big 12 Championship and lose. Then Texas or Texas Tech could go to the BCS National Championship without having won its division...Good Lord! Why cant we just have a playoff!?!?!

It's sad that the most passionate sport in America with the most passionate fans in America has to work out scenario's for their teams to get into the Championship game.

Take the top 12 and let them go at it! No problems. No rogue, brainless writers determine the championship game. No PC or MAC with 550 GB of Ram, and six hard drives will have any say.

You have 120 teams in the FBS. Restructure the conferences. Place 12 teams in each conference. Shorten the regular season to 10 games (eight in conference, two non-conference games). Have a Championship Saturday when all the conference championship games are played.

The 10 conference champions and two at-large teams go to the National Championship Tournament. The top four teams get a first round bye week. The other eight teams play the first round with the four winners playing the top four teams in the second round.

The first round is played the first weekend in December which is currently when the Conference Championships are held. The second round is played the following week.

The Final Four would be held on January 1 with both games being played in two of the current BCS Bowl games. The National Championship is held a week later on January 8.

All the teams that did well during the season still get to go to Bowl Games beginning in mid-December. And you still have plenty of great, exciting New Year's Day bowl games. Now really. How hard was that?

While I don't expect anyone important to agree with my plan, I would love to see it happen.

I definitely don't like the government sticking their noses into anything, much less my favorite sport. But at this point I would take government intervention.

Either way you look at it, it's time for the never-ending saga to end. It's time for change!
