NFL Picks Week 2: Will Indianapolis Colts Notch First Win over Cleveland Browns?

Ryan PhillipsSep 13, 2011

The Indianapolis Colts looked nothing short of awful in their 34-7 Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans. Indianapolis trailed 34-0 before Reggie Wayne scored a garbage touchdown with 9:17 remaining in the contest. Taking everything into consideration, it's hard to see the Colts winning a game any time soon.

Indianapolis had just 236 yards of total offense. Of that, just 64 yards came on the ground. We knew the passing game would suffer with Kerry Collins subbing for Peyton Manning, but seeing the team's rushing attack come up woefully short makes the immediate future look even more grim.

In addition to Collins' throws not looking sharp, he fumbled three times (losing two), was sacked three times and the Texans registered seven hits on him. That lack of protection from the offensive line doomed the passing attack.

Defensively, Indianapolis was incredibly soft against the run. With leading rusher Arian Foster inactive, the Texans still racked up 167 rushing yards to complement a passing attack that gained 217 yards. The Colts simply couldn't get it done on either side of the ball.

On top of that, special teams were an issue for Indianapolis, as the Texans got a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown from Jacoby Jones.

The Colts will welcome the Cleveland Browns to Lucas Oil Stadium for a Week 2 matchup featuring two 0-1 teams. The Browns dropped their opener to the Cincinnati Bengals, 27-17, after holding a 17-13 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Browns were burned for two big plays in the fourth. Bruce Gradkowski found A.J. Green for a 41-yard touchdown with 4:28 to go, then Cedric Benson put the game away on a 39-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining.

Colt McCoy had a tough afternoon as he completed just 19-of-40 passes for 213 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. His 70.1 quarterback rating was dismal, and he didn't get much help from the running game as Peyton Hillis registered just 57 yards on 17 carries (3.4 average).

The offense simply has to get better if the Browns hope to be any kind of threat this season.

Still, even though the Browns made lots of mistakes and basically gave away a win by allowing big plays, right now the Colts don't look like they could beat anyone outside of the Kansas City Chiefs. I just don't see them getting a win in Week 2.
