Percy Harvin Video: Watch Vikings Playmaker Shred Hapless Chargers Special Teams

Tom KinslowJun 1, 2018

Well, it's good to see San Diego fixed those special teams issues from last season.

It didn't take long for the Minnesota Vikings to get on the board in the 2011 season as Percy Harvin took the opening kickoff and darted out of the end zone, ending his run 103 yards later with his first touchdown.

San Diego was plagued by lapses in the return game in 2010, and Norv Turner's squad either wasn't prepared to cover a return, or didn't expect it because of the new kickoff rule.

Harvin carved through the Chargers' special teams and made it look easy with his elite speed, something he has done a lot in his young NFL career. The former Florida Gator has been an explosive playmaker with the Vikings, and he has proved that if you have a top-tier return man, the possibility for big plays is still there.

After what happened to the Saints and now the Chargers, teams better be ready to field a return, because return units are going to start attacking lazy defenses, and it can swing the momentum of the game.

San Diego quickly responded after the lapse in concentration, but clearly the special teams are something to watch going forward. If Turner doesn't fix these issues and quick, it's going to find him on the coaching scrap heap, because it doomed them last season, and it has the potential to do so again if he's not careful.

Meanwhile, for Minnesota, it will need plenty more of those plays from Harvin if it wants to be a contender in the NFC North. With Sidney Rice in Seattle, the Vikings need their young speedster to step up and make defenses game plan for him each and every week. If not, Minnesota will struggle to provide anything of substance in the passing game.
