Luciano Moggi Says AC Milan Are 'Light Years' Ahead of the Rest of Serie A

Tim FontenaultJun 6, 2018

Luciano Moggi, the former Juventus general manager, believes that defending champions AC Milan are "light years" ahead of the rest of Serie A.

The outspoken Italian, currently on trial for sporting fraud for his role in Calciopoli, is known for being quick to give his opinion. On this occasion, he gave his take on the 2011-12 season to Radio Mana Mana Sport.

""Milan are light years ahead compared to the rest.

"I have doubts Inter will do well because of the way they operated on the transfer market. They bought badly and I don't think they will be competitive.

"Milan, on the other hand, did well on the transfer market and they showed logic in terms of how they shaped their group of players."

Milan had a greatly successful offseason this summer.

Defenders Taye Taiwo and Philippe Mexes arrived on free transfers from Marseille and Roma respectively. Stephan El Shaarawy, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder, joined as part of a co-ownership with Genoa.

Towards the end of the window, the club captured Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani on loan and purchased Palermo's Antonio Nocerino.

Losses were few and far between.

Andrea Pirlo left for Juventus. Other than that, Milan only said goodbye to seldom-used defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Marek Jankulovski, Oguchi Onyewu and Nicola Legrottaglie.

Inter did very little to revamp their squad. The club brought in Andrea Poli and Mauro Zarate on loan and have since added Uruguayan star Diego Forlan, but only after Samuel Eto'o left to become the highest-paid player in the world at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

The club also brought in Ricardo Alvarez, the highly sought-after Argentine. However, the defense is where Inter are weakest and they did next to nothing to fix that.

At the top of the table, there is a lot of competition. With only three Champions League spots this year, there will be even more.

Milan go in as favorites, while Napoli and Juventus are looking strong this year and could take those other two Champions League spots.

Inter may barely miss out next season. Lazio and Roma are also looking extremely competitive, but it is too early to tell.

One thing is certain: with Serie A set to begin today, it is going to be one fantastic season. Milan are favorites, but this is anybody's at the moment.
