Tuesday Morning Running Back Week 11: Epics in Foxborough and Pittsburgh

Dan PieroniNov 19, 2008

Well I guess Brett Favre has been worth every penny.

At least so far anyway.

For as much as it pains me to admit it, the New York Jets are sitting pretty atop the AFC East.

And they did it all by themselves.

If there's one criticism you can levee upon the Jets, it's that they played too conservatively in the second half and allowed the Patriots to erase what was once an 18-point deficit.

Give credit to Matt Cassel, too, who would have thought that he'd pass for 400 yards or display excellent clock management on the final drive in the fourth quarter? It wasn't his fault that the Patriots lost.

But Brett Favre marched down the field, and Jay Feely just hooked the football in the right upright, and the Jets eked out a 34-31 win in Foxborough.

Next week both teams face tough games, the Jets visit the Titans and the Pats visit the Dolphins. It should be one heck of a ride in the AFC east the rest of the way.

This was a wild weekend in the NFL, including a tie, as the bullet points will now recap for us.

  • The Saints finally got their first road win over Kansas City on Sunday, and in the process, Drew Brees set a NFL record for the most passing yards in a season through 10 games.
  • So they call the Panther running attack of Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams "The two-headed monster", huh? Does that mean when they give interviews they speak a broken form of English like the character on Sesame Street?
  • I don't know how Rod Marinelli can stay as positive as he is when his team is 0-10. He must be on antidepressants.
  • Whoops of the week goes to Falcons WR Roddy White, who dropped an easy TD pass that would have given the Falcons the lead and perhaps the win with under two minutes left in the fourth.
  • What did Donovan Mc Nabb and Andy Reid except after overtime on Sunday? Another coin flip, dueling field goals? I know ties are rare in the NFL, but you got to know the rule book!
  • Perhaps this may be a shock to you, but the Raiders haven't scored a touchdown in over 195 minutes. Somewhere Lane Kiffin is giggling like a school girl.
  • A big reason why the Colts are on is that Peyton Manning has thrown for seven touchdowns and no picks in the last three games.
  • Yes John Gruden, you have a wonderful defense, that was sparkiing in the last drive against Minnesota. Stop badgering the media about how you your team doesn't get any respect, even though you're 7-3.
  • As coach McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers said, the Packers executed as well as they had all season on Sunday. Especially the offensive line that opened holes for Ryan Grant all day.
  • The Giants certainly proved that a punishing run can stop a punishing defense.
  • It's nice to see that the 49ers can absolutely destroy a team on their level.
  • Why don't we just send the Seahawks and their merry way and forget that this season every existed. That way they can start with a clean slate next year.
  • Great teams can make adjustments on the fly. Kerry Collins threw three touchdown passes in the second half, and what do you know, the Titans are still perfect.
  • Whether the Steelers made an illegal forward pass is irrelevant, they still won the game and that's all that matters.
  • The Redskins have got to find an offensive spark or else their season will go down the tubes.
  • Poor Rian Lindell, the ghost of Scott Norwood clearly haunted him on Monday night.
  • Be sure to look for my annual list of things I'm thankful for next week in this column, see you then!
