We now have 120 NCAA Teams in the FBS? Honestly, some of them need to go.
Look, don't take this personal, La.-Lafayette......but we no longer require your services.
Miami of Ohio.... I'm sorry, but we already have a Miami......and they require a lot of attention as it is.
Florida Atlantic? Is there a Florida Pacific that I'm not aware of?
So many teams.
So few shots at a title.
That's what we are talking about here, right? A chance at a title. A chance at the big time.
This is why these schools are allowed to move up into FBS level football, right?
Wrong.
"Congratulations to your 2009 NCAA champs........Kent St."
Yeah.....look, we all know these teams have absolutely no shot at a title. Heck, they are lucky if the Meineke Muffler Bowl comes calling after a 10-win season.
The reason there are 120 schools at this level is mostly the same reason we do not have a nice playoff system in place: guaranteed money.
School presidents at small colleges enjoy nice payoffs from larger schools when invited to come and play. There is also the allure of getting into a bowl game which means increased exposure of the school.
This is why we currently sit at 120.
And the number will not stop there.
Sure, there is currently a moratorium on schools being allowed the make the jump from FCS to FBS, but it won't be long before they allow a few more to join the party.
Oh, if only Obama were president of the college sports world as well. I feel that not only would he "throw his weight around" to implement a playoff system, but he would also balance the college football world by trimming off the teams living off the fat.
Mr. Obama, let me give you a budget proposal, if I may, sir.
You suggested in the 60 Minutes interview that we have eight teams in a playoff system. I feel I have the right strategy for you to get us there without any fussing or fighting about who deserves to be part of the Final 8.
My perfect world formula:
- 64 teams in the FBS.
- Four super conferences consisting of 16 teams each.
- Each conference is divided into North/South or East/West consisting of eight teams. (Pac-16; Big XVI; the other Big XVI; the Super SEC)
- no non-conference games
- each conference has it's own title game
- Final Four play each other
So what does this mean for the other 56 teams? Don't really know. Don't really care. All I know is that we don't need them.
The next part of my proposal would of course involve who gets cut. This is not an easy task, but it's definitely do-able and definitely necessary. I understand that some of these teams make some noise every now and again, but history shows that these teams tend to slide right back into mediocrity and therefore are expendable.
This list is made up of my own special formula which includes what have you done lately, what is your history and what conference do you belong to.
