BCS Standings: Why a Computer Will Screw Florida
As I watched my team get dropped by San Francisco, they were showing the "new" batch of rankings for the BCS heading into this weekend's key matchup between Texas Tech and Oklahoma. We all know that if Texas Tech wins this game, they're facing Mizzou for the Big XII Championship in a few weeks. But what if Oklahoma wins...does this put them in the hunt for the BCS Championship? Or will it be Texas playing for the national championship against either Florida or Alabama?
Truth be told, this system that we have working now is not doing the job. But the system will most likely pick Texas over Florida to play for the crown. Why? Because if the computer still thinks that Texas is better than Florida, then we're not the ones that's going crazy...it's them that agree with the computer.
But don't expect the guys in Austin to disagree. They believe that as long as Texas is #3 and Florida is #4, then the computer is doing its job right. But what if the computer is wrong? I have never agreed with the so called "experts," but this is one time that I have to. If they say that Florida and Oklahoma are the two hottest teams in the country, why not have them ranked higher than Texas? What does make the 'Horns so special? Because they lost by six to Tech, who were ranked lower than them to start with? Because they squashed the Baylor Bears who are sitting in the basement of the Big XII?
I think not. The reason that Texas is ranked higher than the two hottest teams in the country is because the computer believes that Texas should have gone undefeated. They also believed that several other teams should have done the same. In fact, how are those teams doing?
Georgia
They were ranked #1 in the preseason polls, and just like that, they floundered that top spot to the Big XII Conference. Now they have two losses under their belt and no chance of redeeming the insult they suffered last season.
USC
The Trojans had the BCS handed to them on a silver platter. In what many thought would be the weakest conference, many have emerged to make it a dogfight for the Trojans to have the Pac-10 Championship. Now the Trojans are on the outside looking in with hopes that either the Big XII or SEC choke at the end of the road.
Oklahoma
The Sooners are considered the Godfather of the Big XII mainly because of their constant acquiring of conference titles. But lately, things are not looking hot for the Sooners. In what was believed to be an easy win for the Sooners has turned into a bonefied nightmare as they will have to do what many believe cannot be done: Beat Texas Tech. After losing by ten to Texas earlier, they have yet to find themselves in the Top 3 since.
Florida
The Gators had one of the lightest schedules of the SEC. But no one knew just how good Georgia, Tennessee or LSU would be. And that's not even mentioning Florida State and the noise they bring. But it was Ole Miss that put Florida's title hopes on the shelf briefly. But now the Gators are looking pretty heading into their showdown with Florida State in two weeks. But they still got a showdown with Alabama to worry about for the SEC Championship. But is it ironic that after Georgia fell from grace, and before the loss to Ole Miss, Florida wasn't even considered #1 material?
Texas
The 'Horns had it all heading into their matchup in Lubbock against the Red Raiders. But a last second touchdown ended their reign as the top team in the country. But since that loss, they have yet to fall from the top 5. The country wants a Big XII-SEC BCS Championship Game. It's good for fans. It's good for ratings. But how can you insult the Red Raiders by setting them up to fail? If Texas wants the BCS bid, be like everyone else and earn it on the field instead of just expecting it to be handed to you on a silver platter?
We are all in agreement that it's going to be the SEC vs. the Big XII for the title in January. We know that it will be either Florida or Alabama representing the SEC. In the Big XII on the other hand, it's a whole nother story. On one side, you have the Missouri Tigers. They had high hopes of finishing their season with the Big XII and the national championships respectively. But a couple of losses shattered their dreams for good. On the lighter side, they've done enough to secure a spot in the Big XII Championship for the second consecutive time.
On the other side is a cluster**** that comes down to this weekend's showdown between the Sooners and the Raiders. If Tech wins, they're playing Mizzou. If the Sooners win, then things get interesting. All three teams are stuck at the top of the Big XII South tied for the top spot and the right to play in Kansas City. On top of that, someone could still play for the National Championship against the SEC.
But does Texas really deserve their chance? Two years ago, they wanted a rematch between Michigan and Ohio State. This year, they want Texas to play for it because they feel that Texas will be a better ratings boost than the Ultimate Underdogs of the Big XII, Texas Tech. None of us are going to get it right, and we'll all be fighting about it until the end. But we all complain when the right teams don't get their shots at their moment of glory...or agony.
In any event, the only way I see Florida playing for the National Championship is winning the SEC Championship against a motivated Alabama team and beating a demoralized Florida State. The only way Texas gets in is if some old cronies decides that he wants to use his mafia links to take out the entire Texas Tech and Oklahoma team after Saturday.
So it comes down to this weekend. Will the computer give it to Florida or Texas next weekend? Will Oklahoma pull off the unthinkable in Norman? And what will the computer do next to cause a riot in Titletown?
