6 Greatest Point Guards in Boston Celtics History
No team has captured more NBA titles than the Boston Celtics.
The men in green and white own an astounding 17 championship banners. Hey, that's 17 more than the L.A. Clippers!
All jokes aside, throughout the years, Celtics All-Stars have come and gone at all five positions, especially point guard.
Here's a look at the six best Celtic point guards of all time.
Why six?
Because there has only been six point guards in the team's history that are Hall of Famers or have a chance to make the Hall in the future.
Chauncey Billups and Gary Payton will not be included on this list since neither player played more than one season in Boston.
Let's begin.
6. Rajon Rondo
1 of 6Rondo was selected 21st overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2006 NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the Celtics.
The former Kentucky Wildcat eventually became the starting point guard on the Celtics squad that won the 2008 NBA title. And in 2010, he helped the team reach the Finals, where they lost to Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers.
Rondo earned a spot on the Eastern Conference All-Star team the past two seasons as well as the All-Defensive First Team.
He's currently one of the league's top point guards. He can't score like Derrick Rose or shoot the ball like Stephen Curry, but when it comes to defense and playmaking, he's your man.
Some fans refer to Rondo as being a bit overrated. They feel he's been so successful because of playing alongside future Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.
But that's silly. Rondo would be an All-Star caliber point guard no matter what team he played for.
Did or will Mario Chalmers ever make an All-Star team because of playing with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh down in Miami?
The answer is no.
5. Nate "Tiny" Archibald
2 of 6In 1972-93, Archibald led the league in both scoring (34 PPG) and assists (11.4 APG) while starring for the Kansas City-Omaha Kings.
The 6'1" superstar was later shipped to the Celtics in the summer of 1978.
Archibald spent five seasons in Boston and helped a young Larry Bird and Co. win a title in 1981.
Also in '81, he earned All-Star Game MVP honors as the East slipped past the West 123-120.
In 1996, Archibald was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history.
4. K.C. Jones
3 of 6Jones won multiple titles with Russell at the University of San Francisco. He would go on to win multiple titles with Russell in Boston as well.
Jones was selected by the Celtics in the second round of the 1956 NBA Draft.
He spent his entire career pro career in Boston, contributing to eight championship teams.
Jones' career averages of 7.4 points and 4.3 assists aren't exactly superstar-like stats. However, he was the ultimate winner and played stifling defense.
Later on as a head coach, he guided the Celtics to a pair of titles in the 1980s.
3. Dennis Johnson
4 of 6After leading the Seattle SuperSonics to a title and claiming Finals MVP in 1979, Johnson was dealt to Boston in 1983.
D.J. would help the Celtics' "Big Three" of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish pick up titles in '84 and '86.
Johnson was known as a tenacious defender. As a Celtic, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team once and the Second Team three times.
Also as a Celtic, he earned a trip to the 1985 All-Star Game—the fifth of his career.
He retired from the Celtics in 1990 and was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.
2. Jo Jo White
5 of 6Can someone please explain why Jo Jo White isn't in the Hall of Fame yet?
Selected ninth overall by the Celtics in the 1969 NBA Draft, White later teamed with John Havlicek and Dave Cowens to lead the team to titles in 1974 and 1976.
He was named NBA Finals MVP in '76 as Boston defeated Phoenix in one of the most memorable series of all time.
White was an All-Star seven times as a member of the Celtics.
He is currently the team's fifth all-time leader in assists and ranks 10th in scoring.
1. Bob Cousy
6 of 6Cousy, without a doubt, is the greatest point guard to ever wear Celtic green and white.
The "Houdini of the Hardwood" joined the team in 1950 and later formed a legendary little man/big man combo with center Bill Russell.
Cousy won six titles during his memorable 13 seasons in Boston.
He was named the league's MVP in 1957 and earned All-Star MVP honors twice.
In addition, he was an All-Star every year that he donned a Celtics jersey.
Cousy hasn't played a minute for the Celtics since 1963, however, he's still the team's career leader in assists with 6945.
Will there ever be a more accomplished Celtics floor general than "The Cooz"?
No way.
