Mexico Tops Uruguay and Claims Second FIFA U-17 World Cup Title
Mexico won the 2011ย FIFA Under-17 World Cup title after a brilliant performance that was fair to say accompanied by a bit of luck.
This marks the second time El Tri holds the title. The first time was in 2005, when coach Jesรบs Ramรญrez led the youngsters to write one of the most important episodes in Mexican football history.ย Today, it was Raรบl El Potro Guitรฉrrez the coach whoย excelled.
Mexico faced Uruguay at Estadio Azteca, one of the most important forums in the world. There were more than 95,000 people gathered, which set a record for the largest final-day crowd in the tournament's 26-year history. And they were ready to sing Cielito Lindo and shout "Ole" whenever a Mexican taunted a rival.
The first 20 minutes were physical, with no clear opportunities for neither squad. But Mexico wasn't ready to let the dream go away. Carlos Fierro managed to send the ball into the area, while Antonio Pollo Briseรฑo jumped to make contact with the ball and put the score at 1-0.
El Tri started to take over, but Uruguay managed to make some long-distance shots that were either deflected or rejected.ย
In the second half, Uruguay was moreย aggressiveย and didn't concede the midfield. Two shots slammed into the post, a couple more were rejected by the goalkeeper, Richard Sรกnchez.
Every timeย Los Charrรบas were close to tying the game, the fans pushed and booed constantly. Mexico took advantage of this. Giovanny Casillas killed all Uruguayan hopes in the 91st minute after Arturo Gonzรกlez went on a counterattackย and served the ball to Giovanny Casillas, who beat Jonathan Cubero for a goal.
Mexico secured its second U-17 World Cup while Julio Gรณmez, Jorge Espericueta and Carlos Fierro were awarded the Golden, Silver and Bronze Balls, respectively. Now, Mexico expects these youngsters to succeed in further competitions and keep the attitude when they become part of the first team.ย
