Winners and Losers from LeBron James' Decision to Sign With Philadelphia 76ers In NBA Free Agency

After three-plus weeks of waiting, we finally know where LeBron James is headed, thanks to ESPN's Shams Charania.

On Friday, he posted: "LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option, Klutch Sports Group and Klutch CEO and Game Over show host Rich Paul tells ESPN."

And shortly thereafter, LeBron himself explained the decision on X.

Now that we know where he's headed, it's time to break down the fit and what it means for the Sixers through the tried-and-true "winners and losers" exercise.

The biggest names on either side of that line can be found below.

Winner: 76ers (duh)

Let's get the nitpicks out of the way first.

There is way too much usage accounted for between LeBron, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid. LeBron is in his 40s. Embiid has maybe the scariest injury history in the NBA. The chances of everyone being anywhere near 100 percent for the playoffs are slim.

But come on.

This is LeBron, who's still a top 30-40 player in the NBA, joining an already talent-rich roster on a veteran minimum. That's the kind of value that can absolutely swing the title race.

And while there will certainly be an adjustment period for everyone who's gotten used to playing with the ball in their hands, everyone in this mix has experience deferring. Maxey has to Embiid, Embiid has to James Harden, LeBron has to Luka Dončić and Brown has to Jayson Tatum.

They can figure out the right offensive balance, and LeBron is the kind of problem-solving playmaker who can expedite that process.

Philly also has a budding potential star in Edgecombe, who will benefit from the amount of attention everyone else on the roster will get.

When you combine that starting five with a bench led by Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade, it's not hard to get excited about this team's chances to win the title.

Loser: The Suitors

It seems fitting that this happened a week after The Odyssey hit the theaters.

Penelope's suitors in Homer's (and now Christopher Nolan's) epic were left scrambling when Odysseus revealed himself to be alive in the final act, and that's exactly what most of LeBron's suitors will do now.

It's not dire for the Miami Heat or Minnesota Timberwolves. Both of those teams already made drastic moves to improve their situations this summer. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in Miami. LaMelo Ball is a bigger talent than Julius Randle for Minnesota.

But the Denver Nuggets (to the extent they were ever in the mix), Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are in trouble now.

All three had seemingly put all of their offseason eggs into this basket. And all three may come back with largely the same rosters they had in 2025-26.

The Nuggets are still short on athleticism (even if they bring back restricted free agent Peyton Watson). The Warriors are way too old to compete with the West's younger contenders and have two roster spots tied up by injured players (Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody). And the Cavs, who just got walloped by the New York Knicks in the conference finals, have to re-sign Harden after losing Wade to the Sixers to stay anywhere near last season's level of play.

Those three teams aren't quite dodging Odysseus' arrows, but in relative basketball terms, they may be every bit as much out of the chase for glory.

Winner: VJ Edgecombe

You could actually spin this the other way. Edgecombe is going to be in a starting lineup that includes Maxey, Brown, LeBron and Embiid. That almost certainly means his touches and shot attempts will go down.

Depending on the player, getting as much usage and as many opportunities to fail and learn can go a long way toward molding the final product.

But for Edgecombe, specifically, this is a win. He will benefit from the tutelage of LeBron. Even if his opportunities may be limited, they could consistently be against the fifth-best defender in the opposition's lineup.

And while it remains to be seen who'll get this role, Edgecombe could still have his chance to be an alpha (or something close to it) if coach Nick Nurse staggers his minutes and allows him to lead some bench units.

All of that, and the experience that comes from seriously chasing a championship, could end up doing as much for Edgecombe's development as any other approach.

Loser: Stephen Curry

The Warriors would've been a long shot to compete for a title even with LeBron, but his spurning the Warriors all but seals the fate of Stephen Curry's last few seasons in the NBA.

Without LeBron, this Golden State roster is potential disaster-level bad.

This is a team that is far from a lock to even make the play-in tournament. And for the greatest shooter of all time and a player who deserves a mountain of credit for sacrificing for his team and teammates, this would be a pretty sad way for Curry to go out. 

Instead of getting one more shot a title, he'll likely be drilling threes for a lottery team.

Loser: The Rest of the East

The Eastern Conference, headlined by the reigning champion New York Knicks, was already looking pretty stout for next season.

The Boston Celtics getting Jayson Tatum back is a big deal. The Toronto Raptors are clearly on the rise. Giannis is now in Miami. And there's reason for optimism for all of the Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic. Even the Washington Wizards should be better.

Before LeBron chose Philadelphia, it looked like the East had a realistic shot at being definitively better than the West for the first time in about three decades.

Now that he's a Sixer, a conference that already looked like a real gauntlet just got even tougher. Teams like the Knicks and Celtics will understandably fancy themselves in pretty good position.

But at the very least, any East team's road to the Finals just got a little tougher with LeBron finally returning to the conference.

Winner: LeBron James

Speaking of LeBron's return to the East, the last time he played for one of its teams, he was coming off his eighth straight appearance in the conference finals.

Yes, the competition is stiffer now than it was then, but LeBron has to feel at home on that side of the country. And he has to feel pretty good about his chances of getting back to the Finals.

He's on a team with two legitimate superstar-level offensive talents in Maxey and Embiid. Brown proved himself one of the best No. 2s in the league in the 2024 playoffs, and his talent is now coming from a No. 4 spot. And Edgecombe has a chance to be one of the best players from his draft class.

This decision was clearly motivated by a desire to get at least one more ring. And it puts LeBron in a strong position to do just that.
