NASCAR: Tony Stewart at Sonoma and the 14 Angriest Interviews of Smoke's Career
Tony Stewart has had many memorable interviews during his 12-year NASCAR career. Smoke hasn't always been able to control his temper, leading to some angry answers to seemingly innocent questions.
Stewart has made it known he won't be pushed around on the track and many of his classic interviews stem from crashes that weren't his fault. Although speaking his mind has got Stewart into some hot water at times, he continues to speak his mind each and every week.
Smoke's most recent outburst came after the race at Infineon Raceway, when he spouted off about blocking and his revenge against Brian Vickers.
Here's a list of the 14 angriest interviews of Stewart's career.
2010 Daytona 500
1 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Media
Reason: Safety of NASCAR
Overview: A member of the media asks Stewart if the increased safety measures are the reason for NASCAR's struggling fan support. Stewart thinks some changes to the media center are necessary.
2008 Food City 500
2 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Kevin Harvick
Reason: Harvick took out Stewart with three laps to go.
Overview: One of Smoke's favorite tactics during the post-race interviews is to sarcastically take the blame for another driver's mistake. He uses that blueprint to take a shot at Harvick.
2008 Best Buy 400
3 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Elliott Sadler
Reason: Sadler's car was seemingly stuck in the middle of the track and Stewart crashed into him.
Overview: Stewart spits out one of his best lines ever, saying, “If I'm within a half lap of Elliott, I know that's going to happen.” The wreck happened on lap 18, meaning Stewart's day was over before it had much of a chance to get started.
2010 Scotts Turf Builder 300
4 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Danica Patrick's exposure
Reason: Stewart believes Patrick is getting too much TV time.
Overview: Stewart says watching any race with Patrick is like watching a rerun. He is shocked to be interviewed after a practice session, deadpanning that Patrick must be finished.
2008 Crown Royal Presents The Dan Lowry 400
5 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Reed Sorenson
Reason: Stewart thought he could have won the race if Sorenson would have gotten out of his way on pit road.
Overview: The interview starts off innocently enough with Stewart talking about his long, hot day on the track. However, when he is asked about Sorenson on pit road it gets him worked up.
2001 New Hampshire 300
6 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Sterling Marlin
Reason: Stewart said Marlin tried to crash him three or four times early in the race.
Overview: A mostly lighthearted interview, but Stewart still found time to take a shot at Marlin. Stewart says the only way Marlin had a chance was the wreck him.
2007 Dodge Avenger 500
7 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. A.J. Allmendinger, Juan Pablo Montoya and David Ragan
Reason: Stewart battled hard to earn a top-10 finish, but felt he could have finished higher.
Overview: Once again the interview is rather mundane at the beginning, but once he is asked about race specifics, the insults start flying. He calls Allmendinger and Montoya stupid and says Ragan doesn't belong in NASCAR's highest series.
2007 Checker Auto Parts Presented by Pennzoil 500
8 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Tire Changers
Reason: Tire changers cost Stewart a possible victory at Phoenix.
Overview: Quick and to the point, Stewart says his tire changers are getting worse, not better. Telling it like it is, as usual, Stewart says he'll spend the next week finding new people to do the job.
2009 Daytona 500
9 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Goodyear Tires
Reason: A pre-race wreck caused Stewart to use a backup car and blamed it on the tires.
Overview: This interview exhibits Stewart at his most perturbed. No sarcastic comments and no joking, just disappointment.
2008 Aaron's 499
10 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Criticism
Reason: Stewart was labeled as the man who caused a huge wreck late in the race.
Overview: Stewart says that he doesn't believe the crash was his fault after watching the replay. He also says that type of aggressive driving is typical at the end of races.
2007 Sam's Town 300
11 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Las Vegas Motor Speedway general manager Chris Powell
Reason: Stewart believes the track conditions for the race were treacherous.
Overview: Stewart says that the entire facility, including the track, used to be nice until Powell and his staff ruined it. He returns to his sarcastic ways as a way to degrade Powell.
2004 Chevy American Revolution 400
12 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Darrell Waltrip
Reason: Stewart had been a part of several wrecks leading up to this interview and wasn't happy with how Waltrip commented on them.
Overview: At first, Stewart attacks the entire coverage team, including Larry McReynolds and Mike Joy. He says they are the only people worried about Stewart's actions. After Waltrip sends down a remark for Stewart though, Smoke goes off on Waltrip.
2007 Daytona 500
13 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. NASCAR CEO and Chairman Brian France
Reason: Stewart thought the debris didn't need to be immediately cleared.
Overview: Stewart takes a shot at the head of NASCAR because the stoppage caused him to miss at least an hour and a half of practice. He seems to insinuate that France should spend more of his large bankroll to improve track-side help.
2007 Pocono 500
14 of 14Conflict: Tony Stewart vs. Clint Bowyer
Reason: Stewart and Bowyer had a couple run-ins during the race.
Overview: Stewart says Bowyer and a few other Busch Series drivers bring their lower-level style to the Nextel Cup and it just doesn't work. He says Bowyer not only ruined his race, but several other teams' days as well.
