Fantasy Baseball: Top 5 Third Basemen on the Fantasy Wire

Solomon RyanJun 29, 2011

To find a hidden gem in fantasy baseball is one of the best feelings you can get.

Last year, it was obviously Jose Bautista and maybe Kendry Morales for the first half. This year, the surprises have been Jay Bruce, Alex Gordon, Asdrubal Cabrera and many others.

The third basemen are having a down year, but there are still some good options out there.

Here is a list of the top third basemen on the fantasy wire.

5. Lonnie Chisenhall, Cleveland Indians

1 of 5

Sometimes you must take chances in fantasy. Lonnie Chisenhall has a chance to make an immediate impact for your team. He was rated the No. 25 prospect this year, and his stats in the minors were pretty good. He had .265 batting average, .352 OBP, with seven home runs and 44 RBIs. So far in the two games he has played in the majors this year, Chisenhall has a .375 batting average, three hits, two doubles and one RBI. He could be a steal.

4. Mike Moustakos, Kansas City Royals

2 of 5

Another hot prospect, Moustakos is a player who is going to be good at his position for years to come. He is average so far in the majors, but that doesn’t mean he won’t pick things up in the weeks to come.

3. Chase Headley, San Diego Padres

3 of 5

Headley is a hitting machine over his last 10 games, having 17 hits. His 80 hits are third among national league third basemen. Headley won’t add a lot of power to your team, but he will have a lot of hits and a decent average.

2. Ty Wigginton, Colorado Rockies

4 of 5

Wigginton was a solid player for the Orioles last year. Although Wigginton started off in a slump this season, he is starting to get back into form.

Over his last 10 games, he has had 12 hits, 11 RBIs, and six home runs. Wigginton is tied for fifth among national league third basemen in runs, 10th in hits, 10th in doubles, first in home runs, and tied for fourth in runs. Look for Wigginton to put together another quality year.

1. Jhonny Peralta, Detroit Tigers

5 of 5

Peralta is a guy some fantasy owners like to shy away from, and with good reason. He has had some good years, and in some years he has looked horrible.

For example, in 2008, Peralta had 23 home runs and 89 RBIs, which are very good numbers for a shortstop or third baseman. In the past, Peralta has not hit for a high average.

This year, Peralta’s numbers are off the charts. He has 12 home runs, 46 RBIs and is batting .310. He is fifth among shortstops in hits, fourth in doubles, second in home runs, and tied for first in RBIs. Over his last ten games Peralta has five runs, 15 hits, two home runs and 11 RBIs. That’s ridiculous.

He is eligible at third and shortstop making him even more useful.
