UFC on Versus 4 Results: Ranking the Top 10 Welterweights in the UFC
Total Chaos!
That is pretty much the best way to sum up the UFC welterweight coming off Charlie Brenneman's upset victory over Rick Story.
Story had a ton of momentum and then cracked the top 10 worldwide rankings a month ago with his victory over Thiago Alves.
Then, due to some insane matchmaking shuffles, Story ends up taking on Brenneman and getting outpointed by the decorated wrestler.
It was not a tremendous surprise based off of the stylistic match-up- but it sure leaves rankings an absolute mess to figure out.
That is why I will go ahead and do it for you. Do not worry. I am right. You're welcome.
I present the top 10 welterweights in the UFC.... (and if you are wondering, yes, Nick Diaz counts)
10. Dong Hyun Kim
1 of 10His last victory was not the most dazzling but Kim is undefeated with five victories inside the UFC and one "no contest".
That forward march towards the title continues as he faces highly ranked Carlos Condit at UFC 132.
Being South Korean, Kim is also one of the brightest stars coming out of east Asia and the Japanese fighting scene.
9. Matt Hughes
2 of 10So what if he was flash-KO'd against Penn in his last bout, Matt Hughes is a freaking legend among legends. Pay the man some respect.
In the fight before Penn, he actually submitted Jiu-Jitsu ace Ricardo Almeida in the first round.
Admittedly, he is also here because his past accomplishments ride out over the rest of the fighters on the bubble:
- Charlie Brenneman
- Rick Story
- Thiago Alves
- Jake Ellenberger
- Mike Pierce
- Johny Hendricks
- Martin Kampmann
- Anthony Johnson
- Mike Pyle
- Rory MacDonald
- Brian Ebersole
8. Diego Sanchez
3 of 10After suffering a demoralizing loss to young upstart John Hathaway in his return to welterweight, Sanchez rebounded with a couple of victories over highly regarded fighters Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann.
The decision in the Kampmann fight was a bit controversial but the two high profile victories in a row are still enough for Diego to crack the top 10.
7. Carlos Condit
4 of 10Condit split a pair of split-decisions between fellow high level contenders Martin Kampmann and Jake Ellenberger in his first two UFC fights.
After getting the nod in the Ellenberger fight, Condit outlasted hot prospect Rory MacDonald and most recently put former No.1 contender Dan Hardy to sleep.
Riding as much momentum as any welterweight contender, Condit will be looking to make yet another statement in his quest for UFC gold at UFC 132.
6. Josh Koscheck
5 of 10Josh Koscheck's career will be needing some direction as he finishes up recovering from a brutal loss to champion Georges St. Pierre- his second loss to St. Pierre.
Thankfully, there is no shortage of welterweight contenders eager to try and build their name off of him.
5. BJ Penn
6 of 10He did not look good in the third round, but Penn did just enough to warrant a "draw" in his fight against Jon Fitch at UFC 127.
What the legendary fighter does next is usually anybody's guess, but a rematch with Fitch seems like a very realistic development.
4. Nick Diaz
7 of 10Even though he has been competing outside of the UFC for over the past four years, Nick Diaz proved his mettle in his last bout by defeating Paul Daley.
Diaz had to rally from the brink of defeat to turn the tides, but Daley was the highest rated fighter he had faced in years.
That momentum is carrying Diaz into a superfight against UFC champ, GSP.
3. Jake Shields
8 of 10Jake Shields could very well be the second best welterweight in the world but he gets edged out as he is coming off of a loss to the champ, and a relatively lackluster victory prior to that.
It looks like his next fight will be against heavy handed wrestler, and 26- year old, Jake Ellenberger.
2. Jon Fitch
9 of 10Mr. Blue collar himself. Probably the most infamous grinder in the sport.
Fitch is 13-1-1 in the UFC and has let it be known that he has had enough of dispatching of contenders.
He wants to fight champions or legends.
It would be hard to argue that he has not earned it.
1. Georges St. Pierre
10 of 10I wish I could accurately express how obvious and redundant it is to list GSP as the No.1 welterweight in the UFC.
I mean, he is the champion.
More than a champion, however, he is an icon for the sport and a portrait of dominance.
His challengers are certainly competitive, but GSP knows how to stay just one step ahead of each of them. That is what makes him great and why his legacy can never be discounted.
