Tottenham: Watch out for the Spurs Next Season!

Ishan ChowdhuryJun 17, 2011

Arsene Wenger recently spoke about how the league is not governed by the top four teams anymore, and I believe he was spot on with that assessment.

There is no team that is a bigger example of that than Arsenal’s local rivals, Tottenham Hotspur

Though the Spurs have not managed to earn themselves another year of Champions League football, their style of play has won them a lot of support and accolades from the neutrals.

In defense, they possibly do lack one top quality defender, as William Gallas is not the youngest anymore and seems to just look for a reason to be in the medical room with Ledley King. Michael Dawson has, however, been a revelation this season and has shown that he has the ability to cut it out at the top level. The likes of Alan Hutton and Assou-Ekotto have also gained a lot of appreciation from many pundits for their tidy work at the back.

However, in Sebastien Bassong and Younes Kaboul, they have two defenders that can only be tagged at best as decent “back-up” options and should never be in the team when the squad is at full strength.

I feel Tottenham boast possibly the best midfield in the league with the likes of the highly skillful Luka Modric (who, in my opinion, was the best player of the second half of the campaign), the physically strong Tom Huddlestone and Wilson Palacious, a defensive cog in Sandro, the pace and ability of tricky wingers Aaron Lennon and Steven Pienaar, the unique ability of Gareth Bale to make his opponent’s look just as good as Steve McMahon’s granny, and the 'signing of the season' in Rafael Van Der Vaart.

It is Tottenham’s strike force that has come under extreme scrutiny, and to be honest, it’s not a championship-winning strike force by any margin and has let them down on a few occasions this season. Pavlyuchenko struck two dream goals on ‘Survival Sunday’ but I’m still not convinced that he can repeat such a performance on a weekly basis. Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe provide the team with diversity in attack, but with both players being highly temperamental, they can’t be counted on to perform for a team that is now desperate to announce itself at the biggest stage.

Harry Redknapp, in my view, is a top manager, and I am sure he would be looking to add some more strength to the team that he has groomed so well over the past couple of years. Tottenham do not need to make wholesale changes to their team, just a couple of smart purchases in the summer transfer window could be enough to galvanize the increasingly strong Lilywhites and make them into a Championship-winning team.
