NFL Trade Speculation: Predicting First 10 Possible Trades Post-CBA Agreement
For the first time in a while there was actually some good news from the NFL regarding the lockout, and that is both sides seem to be ready to talk and hopefully get us through this nightmare of an off-season.
However, despite the lockout still in effect there are rumors galore flying around about what would happen once the lockout ends. Will there be trades? Will there be a free agency period, and if so, for how long?
As we all speculate on what will happen, let’s take a look at 10 possible trades that might happen right out of the gate. They are in no particular order. These are just 10 possible players that might find new homes come August or September.
Disclaimer: These are just speculations based on what makes sense, not what will actually happen.
10: Brady Quinn to the Bills
1 of 10
Rationale: Denver will most likely trade Orton or Quinn. Elway is not stupid. Keeping Orton makes more sense right now because he offers them a chance to win if Tebow is not ready, or struggles.
Trading Quinn makes sense because he is still young and has remained highly professional about his situation in Denver given all the hoopla around Tebow, coaching changes, etc.
Why the Bills? The Bills did not draft a QB in the draft and Fitzpatrick is the only legitimate man on the chart. By acquiring Quinn, relatively cheap I might add, offers some solid competition and Gailey’s offensive system favors a quarterback with Quinn’s style
9: Jimmy Clausen to the Dolphins
2 of 10
Sticking with our former Fighting Irish QB's.
Rationale: Clausen will not be given the chance he deserves in Carolina, and the Panthers would do well to part with him because if he goes into camp and out duels Newton, what would the fans think?
This is one of those, “we better do the deal or it might come back to bite us” deals. There are some GM’s out there who had Clausen rated on their boards who would show interest in the young Fighting Irish alum. And how much fun would it be to see two former Notre Dame QB’s traded in the same off-season?
Why the Dolphins? It would be foolish to think the Dolphins are overly satisfied with Henne, and since the oft-injured Pennington went down, again, Clausen would bring a legitimate competition to camp. Huh, didn’t Clausen (freshman) and Henne (senior) face one another in 2007? I believe Henne was hurt despite Michigan’s blowout win over ND 38-0. Ouch!
8: Donovan McNabb to the Bengals/Vikings/Titans
3 of 10
Rationale: It seems obvious the marriage in DC is over and the Redskins will shop McNabb at its earliest convenience. There are teams that could use a veteran presence.
The reason I put down these three teams is because all three drafted young franchise type quarterbacks who are losing time without camps and reps. I cannot say definitively which of these three are more interested than the others or not interested at all, but it seems more than likely that one of these teams will bargain shop McNabb and try to squeeze a year or two out of him.
Why? Be it drama or truth, McNabb has shown this penchant to wear down by season’s end, nonetheless, he is still a better option than many younger backup quarterbacks out there. He will provide instant leadership and credibility.
7: Steve Smith (Panthers) to the Ravens
4 of 10
Rationale: Houshamazilly is just not working out in Baltimore, Mason is 80 years old, yet amazingly effective and Boldin needs some help.
Smith still has two years left on his contract, and he is owed $15 million over those two years, so reason would justify the Panthers desire to dish the disgruntled wideout, and Baltimore would be a welcome venue given their Super Bowl aspirations.
Why the Ravens? Smith would make a nice complement to Boldin. Even though they drafted Torrey Smith from Maryland, The Panthers Smith offers that two year window, and the other WR’s for the Ravens are nothing more than backups.
6: Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals
5 of 10
Rationale: Everyone wants to see Kevin Kolb get traded somewhere, so allow me to jump on the bandwagon and go along for the ride. The Cardinals are most likely one of several teams interested in the young man's services.
I actually think it makes better sense for the Eagles to hang on to Kolb just in case Vick gets hurt this year because the Eagles are on the verge, so why jeopardize Vick going down and turning to Kafka?
Why the Cardinals? Because Kolb is the most coveted QB out there that appears to be available and the free agent market is weak in the area of QB. The Cardinals have a motley crew for quarterbacks, so why not toss Kolb into the mix.
Is Whisenhunt trying to get off cheap here with his quarterbacks? Seriously, Skelton is a fifth round choice, Max Hall is a FA signee as is Anderson. It’s a joke really, and they were lucky to go 5-11 last year.
If Whisenhunt does not do something this year about his QB position, will he be back next year? All signs point to having a franchise quarterback, and they desperately need one.
5: Carson Palmer to the Seahawks
6 of 10
Rationale: I have one, but the Bungles obviously do not. I have chronicled time and time again in the past that the Bengals should give the man his trade and at least get something back for him.
If the Bengals are trying to look at this from a principle standpoint, here is some advice, nobody cares about what integrity you are trying to hold on to. Your franchise is a mess, and your stubbornness is holding back the team. Sell the team!
Why the Seahawks? Does Carroll have enough faith in Whitehurst? Will Hasselbeck depart via free agency? No and yes are the answers.
4: Albert Haynesworth to the Raiders
7 of 10
Rationale: Raiders were 29 in run defense last year. Haynesworth would give them a fire plug in the middle to help seal the sieve that is the Raiders run defense.
I have uttered this trade before and many have mocked me for suggesting it. That’s okay, but if it comes true then doubters should be forced to wear zebra shaped makeup of silver and black on their face and make it their new profile picture on Bleacher Report.
Why the Raiders? Because of what I said above, and wouldn’t Fat Albert look good in silver and black? He could add to a long list of great Raider DT’s…maybe.
3: Reggie Bush to the Rams
8 of 10
Rationale: It’s called the Marshall Faulk syndrome. If you combine Jackson with Bush you get Marshall Faulk.
The Rams are in need of someone who could be that added weapon for Bradford. Even though Jackson is a very good receiver out of the backfield, Bush gives that added dimension.
Bush is a productive player, albeit when healthy. He has marketable value and may have worn out his welcome in New Orleans.
Why the Rams? The Rams are close to making a push for the division title and Bush would add a nice piece to that push.
2: Aqib Talib to the Raiders
9 of 10
Rationale: The Bucs need to rid themselves of a cancer. The Raiders will need to replace Asomugha.
Talib is a talented kid who just seems to find trouble a la “Pac Man” Jones, but that will not scare away a guy like Al Davis. Davis should have moved the Raiders to Vegas because he is one gambling man. The former Jayhawk had six INT’s last year, and Davis is all about production baby.
Most likely Talib will get released, but again, this is all about speculation and if he was to remain a Buc, they could certainly try to at least work a trade first to see which sucker, err, I mean, team would gamble on the oft-troubled DB.
1: Kenny Britt Gets Traded to the Bears
10 of 10
Rationale: Like Talib, Britt has more run-ins with the law than Lindsey Lohan on a Saturday night, but here is another talented guy that some team might nibble at dealing for.
Britt is a productive receiver that could at least fill a No. 2 role, and the Bears could use another weapon for Cutler. As bad as the Titans were last year, Britt averaged 18.5 YPC and had 9 TD’s.
Why somewhere else? Britt has two outstanding warrants against him in TN. I don’t think he is anxious to return. The Titans would do well to trade this troubled young man and get some value for him, or else they may just release him and get nothing.
