Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Is What Everyone in the World Wants to See

Leo ReyesJun 15, 2011

After announcing his ring return and naming Victor Ortiz as his next foe, Floyd Mayweather Jr. must be wondering why boxing fans are still clamoring for a fight between him and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao despite the praises he is getting for his choice of Ortiz.

Readers of articles posted on popular sports sites about the upcoming Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight who share their views on the topic would end up talking about the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight and not Ortiz facing Mayweather.

In many sports gatherings or social functions, the topic is all about Mayweather and Pacquiao and when the most talked-about fight is going to happen. They usually talk less about Mayweather's tuneup with Victor Ortiz and more about the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight.

Even politicians and entertainment celebrities are now riding on the popularity of Pacquiao and Mayweather for wider media reach.

Today's fans are not happy with mediocre fights or boring fights or mismatches or money fights like the recently staged Pacquiao-Mosley fight. There seems to be a different breed of boxing fans now.

They want real and entertaining fights.

Fans will not mind paying a $59.95 pay-per-view subscription if they are offered a quality match. And to these paying fans, there is only one fight out there that is worth the PPV money, and that is the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather match.

Scoop Malinowski wrote in his boxinginsider.com article: "Though Floyd has been allowed to handpick Victor Ortiz as his next opponent, the buzz in boxing is still all about Floyd fighting Manny. Everyone is still talking about Floyd vs. Manny, not Ortiz."

They are talking about Floyd vs. Manny in other pro sports locker rooms too, including baseball, hockey, football, track and field and even…tennis. Tennis?! Yes tennis. Tennis stars Andy Roddick and Andy Murray recently held a debate about the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight (Roddick likes Pac, Murray favors Floyd).

Quite a number of quality matches are lined up in the next few months leading up to the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight in November.

These fights, which appear on the Ring Magazine website, include Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah, David Haye vs. Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Agbeko vs. Abner Mares, Vitali Klitschko vs. Tomasz Adamek, Danny Green vs. Antonio Tarver, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Ryan Rhodes, Devon Alexander vs. Lucas Matthysse, Humberto Soto vs. Motoki Sasaki, Mark Melligen vs. Freddy Hernandez, Brandon Rios vs. Urbano Antillon, Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara and Pawel Wolak vs. Delvin Rodriguez, among others.

Most of these matches are title fights, but to some boxing fans, they do not measure up to the excitement the Pacquiao vs.Mayweather fight brings as they await the resumption of negotiations after the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight in November.

Boxing insiders say Pacquiao and Mayweather could face each other in the ring as early as May next year regardless of the result of their respective fights.

It is possible though Pacquiao will give Tim Bradley a shot in May and face Mayweather instead in November.
