Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Player Plus Cash Deal Could Land Gary Cahill
The Daily Mail has reported that Arsenal may consider offering young central defender Ignasi Miquel to Bolton Wanderers, as a makeweight in a deal for long-term target Gary Cahill. Arsenal's interest in signing the England defender has been an open secret for some time.
Speculation is rife that Arsenal are about to bolster their shaky back four. Gary Cahill is a favoured target, having risen to international prominence under the guidance of Wanderers manager Owen Coyle. The 25-year-old is entering his prime. His leadership and aerial prowess are two traits sorely lacking in the Arsenal defense.
Cahill could also appeal over other mooted targets because of his comfort playing out from the back. Defenders who are composed on the ball and can contribute in passing moves will certainly command the attention of Arsene Wenger.

While Arsenal have been linked with a number of defensive candidates, a possible deal involving Cahill and a Gunners youngster going the other way, could have some real traction. Owen Coyle oversaw a fruitful loan spell for Jack Wilshere in early 2010. He achieved similar success this past season with Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge. Coyle could welcome the chance to help develop another young starlet at the Reebok stadium.
An ongoing problem in any potential Arsenal move for Cahill has been the club's reluctance to meet Bolton's hefty asking price. Wanderers have set a value in the £15 million to £20 million range. Arsene Wenger has been understandably reticent to part with such a sum for a player with only one year left on his contract. Loaning Miquel could make a deal more palatable to the Bolton hierarchy and encourage a price more akin to Cahill’s contractual reality.
Arsenal themselves would benefit from such a move. Ignasi Miquel is a player the Gunners have high hopes for. The young Spanish central defender desperately needs Premier League experience. Allowing him the opportunity to compete in an environment with less expectation would be the perfect way for Arsenal to ensure his continued development.
If this deal happens it would certainly benefit both parties. Arsenal would acquire a prominent defender whose signing would inspire confidence and demonstrate their intent to challenge for major honours. Bolton could again benefit from the presence of a talented Arsenal youngster in their ranks and continue to build a reputation as a club adept at enhancing young talent.
