Alistair Overeem Intends to Face Cain Velasquez to Determine Best Heavyweight
If you ask Alistair Overeem, he would tell you he is the best heavyweight fighter in mixed martial arts today, it is not hard to deny him of that.
Overeem has won titles in organizations throughout the world and remained active when he is not fighting MMA. But if he wants to be considered as the undisputed heavyweight, there are a few goals he intends to accomplish.
“If I would win the tournament, I personally, and I believe many fans with me, would love to see the (winner) of the tournament against the UFC champion, Cain Velasquez," Overeem told MMAWeekly.com
The Dutch kick boxer will face Fabricio Werdum in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix next Saturday night in Dallas, Texas, a bout that he said is his only concern at this point.
And why shouldn't it be, after all the Brazilian already holds a victory over his opponent stemming from their bout in Pride FC. While all fighters competing in the tournament are immensely talented in their own right, Overeem sees this tournament as an opportunity to prove his worth among the heavyweight rankings.
"I see this Grand Prix as an opportunity to show not only the fans in the U.S. but to the fans all over the world, that I am No. 1,” he said.
A potential super-fight between Velasquez and Overeem, should he emerge as the winner of the tournament, would make sense and would fittingly determine the top heavyweight in MMA.
But opponents like Werdum are in front of the Strikeforce heavyweight champion and only he directs his path in order to compete against the top heavyweights in the UFC. And that path starts next weekend.
"I’m taking this fight very serious, if you look at both of our papers, this is a very exciting fight," Overeem said of his opponent.
"Fabricio (Werdum) has been incredible the last couple years, and me myself I’ve not been sitting still. It’s going to be an incredible fight.”
