UFC 131: Power Ranking Junior Dos Santos' 6 UFC Fights
When UFC heavyweight contenders Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin square off in the main event of UFC 131, fans will be expecting fireworks.
With 13 fights on each of their records, only Dos Santos (12-1) has been the distance once in his career. Carwin (12-1) has never been the distance. They both have a combined 15 knockouts in 24 wins between them.
Carwin was a late-replacement for former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, who coached on the opposing team of the last season of the Ultimate Fighter. Santos was the other coach.
The fight card will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and it's sure to be one exciting night of fights that should end with fireworks.
Santos is 6-0 in the UFC, and this is an overview of those fights.
No. 6: Gilbert Yvel (UFC 108 - TKO)
1 of 6
Heavyweight striker Gilbert Yvel made his UFC debut at UFC 108, replacing an injured Gabriel Gonzaga.
Yvel has 31 knockouts out of his 36 victories, and his fight with Dos Santos was sure to be a stand-up battle with a conclusive knockout ending.
It came down to who landed the harder shots first, and it wouldn't be the fighter who was once disqualified for knocking out a referee.
Dos Santos landed a huge left hook early in the first round that sent Yvel to the canvas. He followed up and landed a few extra strikes before the referee saved the former kickboxer from receiving any more damage.
No. 5: Stefan Struve (UFC 95 - TKO)
2 of 6
Stefan Struve was known for having a great chin, and when he made his UFC debut at UFC 95, it was sure to be tested by the powerful striking of the Brazilian who was coming off of a huge upset victory over Fabricio Werdum.
Less then a minute into round one, and Struve was on the floor with the referee looking over him. Dos Santos swarmed on him from the opening bell and didn't let up until the referee jumped in 54 seconds into the first round.
It didn't mean as much then, but looking back on it now makes it all that more impressive. Struve would go on to compile an impressive UFC record of 5-3.
No. 4: Mirko Cro Cop (UFC 103 - Submission)
3 of 6
Mirko Crop Cop had been a mirror of himself in all of his UFC fights, and his fight with Dos Santos probably shouldn't mean as much as it did for the 25-year-old.
The two met in the co-main event at UFC 103, and it was promised to be a stand-up war between a legend and an up-and-comer.
For the first time in his career, not only did Dos Santos go into the third round, it was the first time he had been past the first. He passed the test.
The resilience and heart of Cro Cop only carried him so far and two minutes into the third round, he quit after taking a brutal knee to the face and an uppercut straight to the eye.
No. 3: Gabriel Gonzaga (UFC Live: KO)
4 of 6
Five of Gabriel Gonzaga's six losses are by knockout, including the one Dos Santos pulled off on the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt at UFC Live on March 21, 2010.
The fight was rescheduled after Gonzaga pulled out of the previously signed fight for UFC 108. It was one of the most anticipated matchups in the division, and Dos Santos was one or two fights away from earning a title shot at then UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar.
It only took one round for him to get the KO, and it came after he dropped Gonzaga with a counter left hand. He followed up with a few strikes to Gonzaga's chin and put him away 3:53 into the first round.
The win earned him the knockout of the night award, and it would be the last knockout he had up to this point in his career.
No. 2: Roy Nelson (UFC 117 - UD)
5 of 6
This may be the most important fight of Dos Santos' career.
Roy "Big Country" Nelson had a lot of hype going into his fight with Dos Santos as he was coming off of two first-round knockout victories over Stefan Struve and Brendan Schaub.
Nobody really knew how good Nelson's chin was until this fight, and everyone found out it was better than they thought. Dos Santos landed bomb after bomb and dropped the Ultimate Fighter winner several times. Still, the 265 lb. heavyweight wouldn't wilt under the pressure.
Dos Santos had never been the distance in his career, and Nelson took him the entire three-round distance and lost a unanimous decision in the end.
What made it impressive for Dos Santos was the fact that he was able to show he can go three, hard rounds with a top heavyweight fighter and still be in the fight in the end.
No. 1: Fabricio Werdum (UFC 90 - KO)
6 of 6
There were many people who thought Fabricio Werdum would have a walk-in-the-park type of fight when he met UFC newcomer Junior Dos Santos at UFC 90.
In Dana White's Youtube blog, a short preview of Dos Santos was shown as he hit the pads in the dressing room, and it was really impressive. There was speed, power and technique being shown by the 24-year-old, and it made a lot of people have second thoughts about his chances in a fight with the UFC title contender.
Shortly after a minute into the first round, Dos Santos landed one of the most brutal uppercuts you will ever see. It sent shockwaves through Werdum and the MMA world as the BJJ black belt fell straight to the canvas, bloodied and beaten.
