John Morrison & the Miz: Put Comparisons Between the Former WWE Team to Rest

Ryan FryeJun 1, 2011

On November 16, 2007, the WWE once again had just paired two random wrestlers together. We figured that they would team for awhile, before sizzling out like the other teams of their generation.

Oh, how wrong were we?

After MVP turned on his rival/tag team partner, Matt Hardy, The Miz and John Morrison were left standing with the WWE Tag Team Championships. The two former ECW enemies soon formed an odd bromance, defeating all of the threats for their tag titles on both SmackDown and the now-defunct ECW brand.

The two would find themselves embroiled in an Internet feud with Cryme Time (Shad and JTG.) The two teams had a war of words on Morrison and Miz’s Dirtsheet, and Cryme Time’s Word Up! on WWE.com.

This solidified Miz as a great talker, but he was still looked at as the “Marty Jannetty” of the team. In comparison, John Morrison was the “Shawn Michaels,” which is a lot of weight to put on the Shaman of Sexy’s shoulders.

Nonetheless, Morrison and Miz would carry on, and dominate the WWE’s tag division. Then, the split came. After dropping the tag titles in the dark match (just the WWE showing disrespect to the tag division) of WrestleMania 25, Miz would betray Morrison after being drafted to Raw in the WWE Draft.

The speculation of who would be more successful ran rampant, and almost everybody thought John Morrison was the man. At first, the IWC looked like they were right. Morrison competed in multiple world titles matches; although he never won them, he showcased his incredible athleticism.

The Miz would immediately call out John Cena, in what seems like great foreshadow by creative now, but was squashed to no end. Miz proved himself as great on the mic, but terrible in-ring.

Not-so-ironically opposite of Morrison, because why do you think the WWE paired them in the first place? In the coming months, Miz would become United States Champion, while Morrison was crowned Intercontinental Champion. This set up an inter-branded feud for Bragging Rights, John Morrison vs. The Miz.

Miz would win the Bragging Rights match and seem to rocket up into Raw’s main event and eventual WWE Champion.

For Morrison, he dropped his title, and would be drafted to Monday Night Raw. On Raw, Morrison has provided a nice upper-mid carder and stunt man, but has failed to live up to the hype of the IWC.

Miz headlined  WrestleMania 27 with John Cena. This time, Miz came out on top, albeit with the help of The Rock.

In my opinion, John Morrison still has a bright future ahead of him. He has struggled as a face, but is still dramatically over with the crowd.

He is the perfect example of the IWC crowning him king before he was ready, but he will still be king one day.

For The Miz, he’s in a curious situation at the moment. He’ll be feuding with his latest former bro-friend, Alex Riley.

He has shown tremendous signs of improvement in the ring, and is the running to be the face of the WWE, when John Cena is ready to give it up.

If it wasn’t for the great pairing on John Morrison and The Miz, it’s doubtful that either one would be sitting in the spot they are today (especially Miz).

I will not harp on who is better, because these two are very different. The Miz is for entertainment and unbelievable promos, while Morrison for five-star matches, jaw-dropping and innovative spots.

To put it simply: John Morrison and The Miz’s differences are what made them great as a team. So now, with different qualities of greatness, we can appreciate this former tag team duo that have now both succeeded (Not to Shawn Michaels' proportions) and not failed (far above Marty Jannetty’s WWE accomplishments.)
