WWE: Support Future Stars Through Mid-Card Feuds

David LevinMay 31, 2011

Kofi Kingston and Dolph Ziggler stole the show Monday night, in what was supposed to be a huge night for the two main draws on Raw’s current roster.

The U.S. Champion took on Ziggler with Vickie Guerrero at ringside. The two put on a show, leading to a victory for Ziggler. He needed the match to regain momentum lost after Edge's retirement.

What makes the Kingston versus Ziggler match work is the power versus agility matchup.

Kingston, a crowd favorite, met an equal in the ring, whose power and tactics led to a perfect blend of action. The writers can build on the match, perhaps leading to future pay-per-views.

An opponent like Ziggler can help a mid-card wrestler like Kingston pick up his game.

Ziggler will benefit from the mat time as well. He was pushed to the side when Edge retired, which left him without a chance to win the world title.

SmackDown management chose Christian and Randy Orton to compete for the title. Ziggler would have been a good choice to carry WWE gold.

Alex Riley and The Miz picked up where they left off last week by battling inside and outside the ring, hopefully leading to a future confrontation in the ring—possibly Capitol Punishment.

Riley’s “handling” of Michael Cole proved that he is more than just a jobber and has some real potential as a star in the making. While there will need to be more build for the eventual match between the teacher and student, fans were not left disappointed with the initial confrontation.

While Kingston and Ziggler excited the crowd, and The Miz is not wrapped up in another feud, other wrestlers and matches brought little drama to the evening.

John Cena and R-Truth did little to woo fans with their match in the final segment of Raw. The dialogue was better than the match.

Both men looked a little out of sorts, Truth with his vignette about being unappreciated; Cena, with his more than obvious poor showing. Truth even decided his interaction with fans was more important than locking up with the champion.

Cena and R-Truth failed to deliver what fans were hoping for: a great match and even better build on a rivalry that the company needs.
