UFC 130 Results: 5 Fights We’d Like to See Travis Browne Take Next

First LastMay 28, 2011

Travis Browne got the biggest win of his career after sending the "Skyskraper" Stefan Struve straight to the canvas with a superman punch four minutes into the very first round of their heavyweight bout.

It was the highlight of UFC 130 and won Browne Knockout of the Night honors and a $70,000 bonus.

With this victory, Browne takes a big leap into the mid-tier level fighters of the heavyweight division. It is a division that isn't hard to rise fast in, and Browne has done that with his three UFC bouts. His second was a controversial draw with Cheick Kongo that many thought he had won.

There are a bunch of opponents he will need to go through before he can get to the big boys, and these are the five best options for him as he moves forward in his career.

No. 5: Mike Russow (14-1)

With only one loss in his professional career that spans 13 years, Mike Russow has been around long enough to challenge many heavyweights, especially the newcomers.

He is most known for his amazing come-from-behind KO over Todd Duffee at UFC 114. His submission game is top notch as well, and he has picked up various chokes over the years.

He recently defeated Jon Madsen to take his UFC record to 3-0.

It doesn't take long for fighters to increase their standing in the UFC's most shallow division, and Russow is one of the few who are at the middle level that are regarded as the toughest to beat.

This is a tough fight for Browne because of Russow's submission game, and it's an important test to take his career to the next level.

No. 4: Mark Hunt (6-7)

Despite having a negative record, Mark Hunt has only fought and lost to some of the very best fighters, including Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett and Gegard Mousasi.

He broke a six-fight losing streak when he knocked out Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 127. His UFC record stands at 1-1, and that's good enough to warrant another chance.

What makes this fight exciting is Hunt's iron chin versus the power of Browne. Nine of Browne's 11 victories have come by knockout, and it includes the devastating right hand he landed on Struve last night.

Can he do the same to Hunt, a fighter who is known for his incredible chin?

No. 3: Dave Herman (20-2)

3 of 5

There is a lot of hype behind Dave "Pee Wee" Herman, and it's well warranted.

Out of 22 bouts, only one has gone the distance. He has knocked out 14 of his opponents, and when you combine that with Browne's record, it comes out to a total 23 knockouts in 34 bouts.

Herman is currently scheduled to face Jon Olav Einemo at UFC 131, and if he can make it past the Norwegian fighter, he will be looking for other challenges inside the leading MMA promotion.

Hermand has fought in various promotions, including EliteXC, Bellator, Sengoku and ShoXC.

This fight has fireworks written all over it, and you shouldn't expect anything less.

No. 2: Pat Barry (6-2)

4 of 5

Pat Barry is scheduled to face former Browne opponent Cheick Kongo, and if the K1 kickboxer can make it past the lethal striking of Kongo at UFC Live on Versus, he will need an opponent to keep him occupied.

Barry is one of the more undersized fighters in the heavyweight division. Browne is one of the tallest at 6'7", and it is something he utilizes very well in his fights.

This is an interesting contrast of styles, and with Browne being undefeated, there will be an extra amount of pressure put on him to keep it that way.

Would he be able to avoid the brutal kicks that Barry usually unleashes in his fights? Would Browne be the first one to be chop him down?

No. 1: Matt Mitrione (4-0)

Former Ultimate Fighter competitor Matt Mitrione is one of the more interesting heavyweights coming up in the division.

He is a successful UFC fighter with no professional experience outside the Octagon. He has gone 4-0 overall with wins over Joey Beltran, Tim Hague, Marcus Jones and Kimbo Slice.

His next bout will be against Christian Morecraft at UFC Live on Versus, and it will be a step in the right direction if he can make it past Morecraft.

If he is looking for a challenge to prove he is ready for the next level of heavyweights, a fight between him an Browne could create the type of hype that makes for awesome action-packed fights and future contenders.
