WWE Kryptonite: Who Could Stop Cena?

Tyson JonesMay 26, 2011

So, once again, John Cena "overcame the odds" to retain his WWE Championship against The Miz in what can be called Cena's specialty match: an "I Quit" match.

First of all, is it really overcoming the odds when you've beaten someone repeatedly? It's similar to how they continue to play Mysterio up as the underdog when he's beaten just about everyone in WWE. John has gotten to a point where he openly makes fun of his opponents, and with bland mic skills like his, it gets old. The only time he ever delivers a good promo is when he's mad, but at this point, what can you do to make him mad, considering attacks usually backfire.

That said, SuperCena has time and time again met his "Krytonite," but WWE has always chosen not to run with it. It's a shame too. WWE has more than enough people to make Cena not only look beatable, but also help push him (to an extent) as a believable underdog.

This slideshow features characters who've been in WWE that show/have shown enough promise to be, in my opinion, threats to SuperCena. Some have fought him before. Some haven't. Feel free to let me know what you think.

"The Viper" Randy Orton

I stress this. ANY TIME.
I stress this. ANY TIME.

I list him hear as "The Viper" because that was what Cena fought and what Orton once was; or as I prefer to call his face gimmick, "The Apex Predator."

Orton has been a consistent nemesis to Cena in recent years. From attacking John Cena's father to running through challengers, Orton proved he could hold his own, beating the likes of Cena, Jeff Hardy, HBK and Triple H. Truly a great time for Randy as a heel, and in my opinion, the best part of his career.

Orton would later join Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes to form The Legacy and continue to be an ever-looming threat when it came to the WWE Title, winning it in a Fatal 4-Way on RAW. Enter SuperCena, who would win the title from Orton at Breaking Point in an "I Quit" match. Not to be outdone, The Viper won the title back at Hell in A Cell, but would fall victim to WWE's Superman at Bragging Rights, losing an Iron Man match.

After a time, Orton changed while leading "The Legacy" as he began to fall victim to the screw-ups of Cody and Ted, eventually breaking away from the two of them and turning into a face. He still, however, continued to get the best of Cena on some occasions as a face, including winning the WWE Title in a 6-Pack Elimination Challenge at Night of Champions, beating Cena, among other stars for the title.

This all proves that at any point Cena can fall victim to The Viper. Heel or face, it doesn't matter. (Though, honestly, it works better for the main as a heel.)

Wade Barrett (W/The Nexus)

Simply for this, Wade should have won a world title already.
Simply for this, Wade should have won a world title already.

The Nexus was originally comprised of the eight NXT Season 1 Rookies. The very first night they came together as a team they destroyed not only the RAW ringside area, but John Cena as well, with stiff punches and kicks to the face, followed by Justin Gabriel putting an exclamation point on the assault with a 450 Splash.

The Nexus from that point on became a legit threat, not only to John Cena, but to all of RAW. For weeks the group attacked anyone and everyone they wanted, all the while smacking Cena down when he attempted to get up.

Wade Barrett proved himself a threat, even beating Cena in a match at Hell in a Cell and forcing him to join The Nexus. During the time Wade had Cena under his thumb in Nexus, I found it one of the few times I enjoyed John Cena in years.

It all went down hill after an awful firing angle (I'd prefer to forget), which lead to Cena "taking out" each member of The Nexus, ending with a victory over then-leader Wade Barrett.

The point being, Wade Barrett and The Nexus proved to be a thorn in Cena's side. Actually, a sword is a better analogy, considering the humiliation Cena endured in The Nexus. Even after "taking them out," Cena still found himself in danger.

CM Punk (W/The New Nexus)

A group based on "Faith."
A group based on "Faith."

CM Punk is a favorite in the IWC, and with his skills in the ring and on the mic, it's no wonder. In fact, I'd go so far as to call Punk the Anti-Cena.

So I guess it was only a matter of time before these two clashed; not just on this list, but also in the WWE. They'd had matches before, but the two first feuded after John Cena destroyed The Nexus. From that, a new group was born, with CM Punk leading it. The New Nexus.

Consisting of Mason Ryan, David Otunga and Micheal McGuillicutty, The New Nexus has proven it can be just as destructive as its predecessor, and in regards to John Cena, CM Punk is usually the avatar for which that destruction is unleashed.

Picking up several wins over SuperCena, as well as leading several assaults on the The Man of Many Colored Shirts, CM Punk has proven to be a consistent threat to Cena, and that threat is even worse with the added muscle of The New Nexus.

Justin Gabriel

Seems PPV Quality to me.
Seems PPV Quality to me.

Now, this one is a bit of a stretch, but bare with me for a minute. How often do we see someone face John Cena and Cena is considered "the underdog"? Well, I think it would be better if the underdog really did beat Cena.

Enter Justin Gabriel. Justin Gabriel has proven on more than one occasion he can deliver when facing big names like Cena and Orton. Gabriel, when he fought against Cena, was a relative newcomer, but I believe this match was one of his best, despite not picking up the win.

Gabriel would be best served as a face, so I believe Cena and Gabriel could have an interesting program no matter the roles. Justin is exciting in the ring and a stark contrast to Cenas' power game, which has grown tiresome over time.

Gabriel has what it takes, in my mind to be a world champion, and a program with Cena would be a great start.

R-Truth

5 of 11

"The Truth" has recently been riding a large wave of momentum as of late. He's a great heel, and in my opinion, a great contrast to John Cena.

R-Truth is upset and feels overlooked. He says being the nice guy got him nowhere. Meanwhile, John Cena has played the nice guy, and it's gotten him, among other things, 10 World Championships.

Add that to the past these two have as friends, and the recent rulings of the Anonymous RAW GM, and you've got a perfect program set-up. Add to that the mic work on both sides and you could have something very entertaining. Where Cena tries to be funny, Truth succeeds.

R-Truth has been on a roll since turning heel, from attacking John Morrison to beating Rey Mysterio in a match, it seems Truth is on a collision course with the WWE Champion.

I believe Truth has what it takes to bring down the Superman.

Alberto Del Rio

6 of 11

Alberto Del Rio has been one of the biggest names in WWE for months now. He's not been here 3 years, and he's already won a Royal Rumble and main-evented a WrestleMania against Edge in his last match.

That said, Del Rio is in a good spot right now, as he's one of WWE's brightest stars, and is Top Heel potential. A good way to see if Del Rio can really make it at the top, is in a program with John Cena.

John Cena preaches "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect." Del Rio has shown none of that, and when you add the fact he's rich (which helps any heel,) it's a perfect scenario to have these guys feud. Add to that, Cena is WWE Champion and Alberto has said it multiple times.

It's his destiny to be World Champion. So, when you take all these elements, I see some great promos and good matches in the future with these two.

Del Rio has shown he can go, facing the likes of Christian, Edge, and Rey Mysterio. In my opinion, Del Rio has shown he can go with anyone, and SuperCena is no exception. Some people say this is a lock for Summerslam. I say, I can't wait.

Jimmy and Jey Uso

7 of 11

This one is pretty out there, but I think it works. Especially with a recent return. This one wouldn't be about a title, though. It would more be about respect.

The Usos are related to Umaga (R.I.P.), and John Cena often would defeat The Samoan Bulldozer. No doubt, I'm sure The Usos didn't much enjoy seeing that. Plus, it plays with Cena's whole thing of going against the odds since it's two on one.

I could see this as not only being a way to give Cena something to do while not holding the WWE title, but to help give two guys with potential the rub they need. I could imagine some pretty good matches with these guys.

The Usos are a favorite team of mine, and I think they need something to do while a heel team is holding the tag team titles. Besides, this feud can also be seen as The Usos softening up Cena for The Rock, so it could be seen as a face turn of sorts. Either way, I like the thought.

Chris Masters

8 of 11

An underrated guy currently caught in the hell called "Superstars." He's a powerful man who I think has all the tools needed to be a big name, and more importantly, to be able to beat John Cena.

Chris Masters has the look and the skill-set to be a champion. The only thing I can think of that would hold this man back is his mic work, and that's mainly because I haven't heard him speak much.

That said, I don't expect much from Cena. It gets the job done, so as long as Masters can do the same, I don't see it being that big a problem for him. Add to that the fact that Masters makes a believable challenger to Cena.

It's a stretch, but we've seen things like it happen before.

John Morrison

9 of 11

John Morrison is currently on the injured list. That said, things aren't looking too bad for the Guru of Greatness. He's apparently taking a crack at comedy while he's out, standing in line for a great feud with R-Truth, which could result in a big push for Morrison.

He was looking good before his injury after a strong showing at Extreme Rules, where he was literally inches away from winning the WWE Title in a Steel Cage match. In that match, Morrison had his share of tussles with John Cena and didn't look out of place.

Morrison has all the talent in the world, but his mic skills seem to be holding him back, as a face. That said, he looks to be working on that while he's out, so things could look up for the man. Considering his next feud will likely be with R-Truth, he's got a lot of work to do if he wants to keep up on the mic.

As for John Cena, we've seen these two battle several times in different situations. Normally, Cena is the one coming out on top, but I think with the right momentum, Morrison can show up SuperCena.

Jack Swagger

10 of 11

Jack Swagger is a former World Heavyweight Champion, but sadly, his attitude backstage ruined it for him. Had he been pushed, but if it weren't for his attitude, I dare say, Jack would be in a much better spot than he is now.

Now, let's look at the thought of Jack Swagger vs. John Cena. It's happened a week before Miz vs. Cena at Over The Limit, and overall, I gotta say, Swagger was awesome in that match. It was an impressive showing, and it made you really believe this man was a former world champion.

Add to that Jack has an impressive look, all the talent in the world and is charismatic when he wants to be, and I think the chances of him being over Cena isn't all that far-fetched. The match with Cena was impressive and with a bit more building up of his credibility, I think Swagger could be something big.
