WWE Over the Limit: 10 Things You Need to Know About the "I Quit" Match

Robert AitkenMay 22, 2011

Tonight, John Cena and The Miz will attempt to push one another over the limit as only one man will walk out with the WWE Championship. The other man will leave the KeyArena in Seattle, Wash., having said the words "I Quit."

There has been a whole bunch of build up and, while many are calling this match in particular a very predictable outcome, I can tell you that in the history of "I Quit" matches, nothing is truly predictable.

We have seen both of these men get extreme and pull out hard-fought title defenses in the past so this one could be interesting. We know that John Cena will probably not say those two special words tonight, but it's difficult to count out The Miz, who has proved to the world over the past year that he really does belong in the main event scene.

In the comments section, please let me know who you got in this match. For an added element of fun, throw in what you think the situation will be that will force the words "I Quit" to come out of someone's mouth.

Over the Limit = "I Quit" Match

1 of 10

This is the second-ever Over the Limit pay-per-view and both will likely feature an "I Quit" match as the main event of the evening. Last year's event had Batista and John Cena in an "I Quit" match with John Cena as the victor.

The match ended last year with Cena grabbing Batista for an Attitude Adjustment on top of one of the cars on the set.

Batista quit, but Cena threw Batista off anyway, throwing him through the stage. Batista would go to RAW the very next night and quit the company.

John Cena: 3-0 in "I Quit" Matches

2 of 10

John Cena has been in three "I Quit" matches previously and has won all three of them. What is to say that tonight will be any different?

Other than Cena, only The Rock has been in more than one "I Quit" match. It is easy to say that Cena owns this type of match.

After all, it plays into his gimmick of "Never Give Up" and "Hustle, Loyalty, Respect."

Yeah, about all of that...

John Cena Has Tapped out Three Times

3 of 10

Man, I love this picture. Whoever made it was a genius.

Cena really has tapped out on three separate occasions in his career in WWE. Don't expect them to be mentioned at all, though.

The three men who have done the feat are Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle. Two of those men are not on the WWE roster right now and the other (Benoit) has been blacklisted by WWE for the way that his life ended.

Even though I don't think I have ever seen The Miz with a real submission hold, Cena tapping is actually possible... well, it was. WWE never remembers their own history half the time.

Seattle Has Seen Two WWE Championship Title Changes

4 of 10

There is a lot made of the history in a city in terms of a title changing hands. For Seattle, the WWE title has been won on two occasions, both of which were at pay-per-views in the last decade.

Brock Lesnar won his second WWE title by beating Kurt Angle in Seattle at WrestleMania XIX in 2003. At 2009's No Way Out (the last No Way Out ever), Triple H won the title in an Elimination Chamber match that also featured Jeff Hardy, Vladimir Kozlov, The Undertaker, Big Show and Edge, who went into the match as champion.

Lesnar's title win took place in Safeco Field, while The Game won his in the KeyArena, where tonight's Over The Limit takes place. It is the first time back in the KeyArena for a pay-per-view since that night.

Alex Riley's Involvement?

5 of 10

I would imagine that Alex Riley would accompany The Miz to ringside, but I don't know if he will be allowed to stay there.

Something tells me that a RAW GM ruling will have Riley banned from ringside, which doesn't make sense. This is a No-DQ match that can go anywhere.

If Riley is there and is allowed to stay, it will give The Miz a huge advantage. Rarely do you see a man in an "I Quit" match have an ally that is right there. Cena will have to, in theory, take out both Riley and The Miz in order to retain.

Capitol Punishment Next Month

6 of 10

This is the poster for Capitol Punishment, which is WWE's newest name for a pay-per-view. In four weeks, perhaps the oddest Rey Mysterio reference (the date will be 6/19) will debut a new PPV in Washington, D.C.

We referenced Batista quitting WWE a year ago because of the "I Quit" match against Cena at Over the Limit.

Murmurs of Batista's return to WWE have run rampant and died for months now. Batista had a deal with Strikeforce that fell through due to UFC buying the MMA company.

Many are predicting Batista's return tonight, while others say that he won't be coming back. I will believe it when I see it.

The Miz on Event's Poster

7 of 10

The Miz is featured on the poster at Over the Limit. So is Daniel Bryan, who is from the state of Washington, but he is not in such a good position. I hope that they will at least give Bryan the dark match to his home state crowd.

Since last year, when Wade Barrett on the poster for Survivor Series and Rey Mysterio on TLC's poster, there has been a bit of a winning streak building for poster people.

Even though there were a lot of faces on the Royal Rumble poster, among the faces were Alberto Del Rio (Rumble winner), The Miz (retained WWE Championship), Edge (retained World Heavyweight Championship) and even R-Truth (defeated Curt Hawkins in a dark match).

Elimination Chamber showed Edge, who defended his World Heavyweight Championship. The WrestleMania poster showed six competing superstars, with three of the six winning their matches that night. This isn't very fair, since two of the men who lost were losers to men on the poster.

If anything, the WrestleMania poster should always get thrown out from this argument. Extreme Rules had Cena, who won the WWE title. Will The Miz continue the winning ways on posters? This also means we can slate Randy Orton for a win at Capitol Punishment.

John Cena and WrestleMania 28

8 of 10

We are constantly getting closer to WrestleMania XXVIII, where John Cena is slated to face The Rock.

As we saw on The Rock's birthday episode of RAW, Cena has placed the image into The Rock's mind that if Cena holds onto the belt, it will be a WWE Championship match.

With this win, The Miz would be pushed out of the top contender spot for a time, meaning that Cena's likelihood of having a long title reign is more possible.

Other than The Miz, the other top heels on RAW are Alberto Del Rio, who many are saying is next, and CM Punk, who seems to be buried at all costs.

Tributes to "Macho Man" Randy Savage

9 of 10

"Macho Man" Randy Savage's death shocked many across the WWE landscape on Friday. Immediately, kind words and tributes came forward from many people that weren't even wrestling fans.

It is difficult to predict what kind of tribute WWE will have for tonight's Over the Limit, their first televised event since Friday (Smackdown is filmed on Tuesday nights, so a true tribute couldn't really occur).

Will either man do the patented elbow drop? Will Alex Riley eat Slim Jims at ringside? Something will be done and it will probably be in this match.

The Rock's Involvment?

10 of 10

A patriotic champion like Cena and his color scheme makes sense to see hold the WWE Championship into Capitol Punishment and into the summer.

Could The Rock and the rest of Team Bring It actually be rooting for Cena tonight?

The Rock knows what it takes to win an "I Quit" match, winning two of them in his career. Only Cena and The Rock are multi-time "I Quit" match winners.

What would be said for The Rock to come to Over the Limit to help Cena retain and keep his WWE Championship hopes alive for WrestleMania? It would only make sense for The Rock to get involved for his benefit.
