Timothy Bradley Reportedly Turns Down $1.4 Million to Fight Amir Khan

Leo ReyesMay 23, 2011

WBO/WBC light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley has reportedly turned down a $1.4 million offer to face British boxing star Amir Khan.

Bradley and Khan have originally agreed in principle they will face each other on July 23 in Atlantic City, but according to Main Events CEO Kathy Duva, who is reaching out to Golden Boy's CEO Richard Schaefer to discuss a possible fight between Amir Khan and Zab Judah, the fight has been turned down.

"When I heard that Timothy Bradley had turned the fight down again with Amir Khan, I said, 'This is great, because I know that HBO is really interested in a fight between Zab Judah and Amir Khan. Everybody there says that it's a terrific fight and I still have July 23 on hold in Atlantic City where I'm quite sure that the fight would sell out," Duva told BoxingScene.com.

"They haven't had such a great fight there in Atlantic City for a long time, and I'm quite sure that they would want it there and that it would sell out. So I was very, very encouraged when I heard about Tim Bradley. So I spoke to Richard Schaefer last night and I was told that they don't want to make the fight, and that the fight's not going to happen with Khan and Judah."

A good number boxing critics were surprised to learn that Bradley has turned down such a lucrative offer, despite the favorable response from the fans.

"I just can’t understand why Bradley will turn down such offer. Bradley can’t even sell out a 2,000-seat ballroom in a casino minutes from his hometown of Palm Springs, Calif. Yet he is demanding more money. If you can’t sell tickets, you’re not worth $1 million or $1.4 for that matter", Edgar Gonzales of myboxing.com says.

"The only logical reason I can think of is Bradley’s contract with Gary Shaw expires on June 30 and he probably wants to be a free agent. Shaw currently takes a 20% cut of the purse given to Bradley if offered by a rival promoter," Gonzales added.

Bradley has reportedly told Khan and reassured him in an interview they will be fighting in the future, but not now.

Timothy Bradley is unbeaten in his professional boxing career with a 27-0 win record. His last fight was against Devon Alexander in Detroit, Michigan in January, winning via 10th round technical decision.
