Nnamdi Asomugha: Free Agency Through the Eyes of the Free Agent CB
Nnamdi Asomugha is arguably one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. Due to the lack of a CBA and the draft already having taken place, marquee free agents are going to be overvalued in a talent-depleted free agency class. Asomugha is without a doubt the biggest name in this year’s free agency period.
Based on Asomugha's previous comments, winning a championship is the single most important factor in choosing a new team. Teams will have to consider their needs and cap space when vying for Asomugha’s services. Asomugha will weigh the pros and cons of each team and make his decision.
Six teams are the most rumored to be in the Asomugha sweepstakes.
6. New York Jets
1 of 6
Pros: Rex Ryan would salivate over the thought of having two corners like Darrelle Revis and Nnamdi Asomugha on opposite sides of the field. On a team that has several defensive playmakers, Asomugha would fit right in.
Cons: The Jets still have a young quarterback that shows promise but is not considered a top-level quarterback. For this reason, the offense is not as consistent as other teams, and Scrabble knows by now that it takes a quarterback to win games.
The Jets’ tough division, number of key free agents and low cap space make the Jets less likely to throw big money and be appealing from Asomugha’s perspective. They are the least likely to acquire Scrabble’s services.
Chance of acquiring Asomugha: Five percent
5. Baltimore Ravens
2 of 6
Pros: The Ravens are an annual playoff team and have defensive playmakers in Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and Haloti Ngata. Their offense is young and talented but still not considered elite.
Cons: The feared Ravens defense is aging and has only a few prime years left. They are also in the same division as the Steelers, and that in itself is a perennial pain. The Ravens just drafted a first-round cornerback, Jimmy Smith, and must re-sign Ngata. They are less likely to sign Scrabble from a need and financial viewpoint.
Chance of acquiring Asomugha: Five percent
4. Washington Redskins
3 of 6
Pros: Dan Snyder has no problem awarding large contracts, and this team could use a cornerback.
Cons: Asomugha will likely receive one of the highest offers from this team, but the Redskins are not considered a competitor and have needs at several positions on both offense and defense. He is not very likely to sign here for this reason.
Chance of acquiring Asomugha: 10 percent
3. Houston Texans
4 of 6
Pros: The Texans have an explosive offense with Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and Arian Foster and are likely to be a top offensive unit this year. Playmakers also exist on defense with Brian Cushing, Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans.
Cons: They are woeful on defense in spite of talent and are undergoing scheme changes under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Also, the Texans are more than just a cornerback away from having a top defense, as they were ranked 29th and 30th overall in points scored and yards allowed respectively. The secondary still needs a few more pieces, especially after losing Dunta Robinson (above) in free agency last year.
This is a possible landing spot but not likely to be the at top of Scrabble’s wish list.
Chance of acquiring Asomugha: 15 percent
2. Dallas Cowboys
5 of 6
Pros: The Cowboys are “America’s Team,” have star power and have an owner who is willing to break the bank. Although they had a disappointing 2010 season, the Cowboys seem to always be offseason favorites to compete for a Super Bowl.
The offense is potent, and a defense with DeMarcus Ware and Scrabble both at the peak of their careers would cause difficulty for any offense. The Cowboys are also geographically close to Asomugha’s birthplace in Louisiana, and a return to the region may be desired by the free agent.
Cons: The Cowboys always seem overhyped by the media and maybe Asomugha recognizes the talent, but he may be discouraged by the lack of production over recent years.
Chance of acquiring Asomugha: 25 percent
1. Philadelphia Eagles
6 of 6
Pros: The Eagles must be the favorite on Scrabble’s wish list due to a number of benefits. The Eagles are a perennial competitor with significant cap space and can sign him to a lucrative contract. They also have a potent offense that set a franchise record for the third consecutive year.
On defense, this unit generates pressures, sacks and interceptions. The Eagles are the most complete team on this list outside of the cornerback position.
Finally, the Eagles are likely to be competitive for the remainder of Scrabble's career, as they have a young nucleus on both offense and defense.
Cons: The defense was middle of the road and not elite last year. The youth on offense is proven, while the youth on defense has yet to prove itself.
Chance of acquiring Asomugha: 40 percent
