Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley Ready to Rumble in Las Vegas
WBO Welterweight Champion and Philippine congressman Manny Pacquiao squares off with American Shane Mosley Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pacquiao will be up against former WBA Super Welterweight Champion Shane Mosley, who fought and won twice over legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya. Mosley is coming off a loss against Floyd Mayweather, Jr in 2010 after dropping Antonio Margarito in the ninth round in 2009. Mosley's last outing was with Sergio Mora last September which ended in a draw.
Shane Mosley, who is turning 40 in September is a 7-1 underdog in Saturday night's fight despite his advantage in height and reach.
The Filipino boxing icon is fresh from his recent victory over Antonio Margarito last November at the Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Before trashing Margarito, Pacquiao fought Joshua Clottey of Ghana, winning via a unanimous decision after his TKO victory over Miguel Cotto in 2009.
The fighting congressman, who is ranked No.1 in Ring's current pound-for-pound ranking, is on a six year, 13-fight winning streak.
Pacquiao is fighting for the first time as an elected congressman, representing Sarangani province in southern Philippines. He is the only active boxer who became a congressman in the country.
Show tickets for the upcoming Pacquaio-Mosley fight fully sold out just hours after the official fight announcement despite boxing fans' call for a fight boycott due to Mosley's poor showing in his last two fights.
Boxing fans say Mosley has slowed down because of age and with that, a win for Pacquiao who is in his prime at age 32, is predictable.
But Pacquaio says Mosley is dangerous—especially in the early rounds—and it's not right to underestimate him because of his ability as a boxer.
“Shane Mosley is still very strong and he moves more like he’s 30 years old,” said Pacquiao of his 39-year-old challenger. “I remember watching him when he fought De La Hoya. I’ve always respected his ability and I know I can’t underestimate him.”
“I’m most impressed by his hand and foot speed,” said the Pacman. “Lots of people criticize him, but he has trained very hard for this fight and he wants to prove he is still good and is still strong.”
Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach earlier predicted a knockout by the pound-for-pound king in the early rounds.
But Mosley says he has figured out Pacquiao and will emerge as winner on Saturday night.
“The trainers say certain things. Maybe they say if Shane fights the same way (in his last two fights) Manny’s going to knock him out. I say the same thing. If Manny fights the same way as against Margarito I’m going to knock him out,” said Mosley.
Still, most boxing fans say Mosley is past his prime and Pacquiao will without a doubt emerge as winner of the Saturday night boxing blockbuster.
