WWE SmackDown Review: May 6, 2011
Hey, Bleachers! I’m back with my weekly SmackDown review—and controversy? You haven’t seen anything yet!
In fact, that was probably a lie. If you’ve been on Bleacher Report in the last week and read one of the 15 million articles that covered it, you’ll already know that Christian lost the World title.
Before SmackDown started, there was a little video package to celebrate the start of Christian’s reign. This video package seemed a little tight on Christian, as I already knew the outcome like everybody else.

Modern-Day Dream Matches 💭

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Christian kicked off the show holding his World Heavyweight title and was moved to tears in the ring, as he spoke of how he waited 17 years to hold the Championship.
This emotional moment didn’t last long however, as Mark Henry came out to challenge for the belt. Then the Great Khali came out.
Now, I’m not being funny, but if Khali was still the feared giant he was a few years ago, then it’s fair enough that he’d come out and challenge—but the fact he is now known as the Punjabi Playboy and wore a bloody tutu on Raw, it didn’t exactly fill me with excitement.
A Punjabi Playboy World Champion? I think I’d rather have the Fingerpoke of Death.
Orton and his beard came out to claim a shot at Christian, and when all four men were in the ring having a nice little chat, Teddy Long came out to take care of business. He let the crowd choose, with the amount of noise they made for each Superstar.
I would’ve loved it if they made more noise for the unexpected Superstars such as Mark Henry—alas it wasn’t to be, and Orton was made No. 1 Contender.![]()
That’s right, we had to hear Teddy say Christian’s name wrong not once, not twice, but three times a lady.
He also made the match for the main event of SmackDown, much to the crowd’s delight. But, as Alberto Del Rio would say, “you already knew that.”
Jinder Mahal made yet another appearance backstage.
Sheamus took on Daniel Bryan next. How long has it been since we saw Daniel Bryan on TV? I mean seriously, he just...vanished. It was an excellent match to say the least. Sheamus’ chest turned a weird shade of red from the knife-edge chops he received from Bryan.
A huge dropkick from Bryan looked like it properly winded him, but he made it to his feet. He looked like he was desperately trying to catch his breath, though.
Bryan locked in the LeBell lock, but Sheamus made it to the ropes and to the outside. He then Brogue Kicked Bryan as he was about to come flying through the ropes—it looked awesome. He then gave Bryan another in the ring and picked up the victory.
I can’t remember the last time I saw Bryan win.
Cody Rhodes came out in a really nice suit, accompanied by his assistants who handed out paper bags to the audience. It was fun the first time this happened, but I don’t want to see the assistants there every time, because quite frankly—Cody doesn’t need them.
He then cut a promo in the ring without being attacked or attacking anyone—brilliant. He is so good at changing his voice to be monotone and shaky—just how you’d imagine a deranged man to sound.
He said his eyes were still burning from Extreme Rules, but he revealed Rey Mysterio’s true character.
Ezekiel Jackson took on The Big Show next, with The Corre and Kane at ringside.
I loved how this match started. Ezekiel shoved Big Show, then, as loud as you like, the cameraman/producer/director whatever, shouted;
“BIG SHOW! BIG SHOW! CAN YOU DO THAT AGAIN?!”
“WHAT?”
“CAN YOU DO THAT AGAIN?!”
Hilarious. Needless to say, Big Show was shoved again.
Ezekiel won with a huge Clothesline from Hell, and walked away from The Corre.
A 30-second Divas match took place next in the form of Alicia Fox vs. Layla. Layla won with a disgusting neckbreaker, making Alicia bend in ways I didn’t think were possible.
Kharma showed up again! She watched Layla run away and Alicia Fox kicked her in the back. It didn’t even faze her—just made her angry. She hit the facebuster on Alicia Fox and that was that for this week. Three heels in one week—that isn’t bad going, Kharma.![]()
The Corre found Ezekiel backstage and confronted him. He attacked them but the numbers game was too much, even for him, and he ended up on his backside, with a laundry dumpster on top of him.
Chavo Guerrero commentated on the match between Sin Cara and Tyson Kidd. The lights were blue and yellow for the entire match which was a cool effect—it helps to get Sin Cara over and makes his moves look even more impressive.
He executed his entrance perfectly once again—there must be something about SmackDown?
The crowd came alive with "Sin Cara" chants and Tyson Kidd looked like he was doing all he could to impress on this rare television appearance. He did better than Primo anyway as he didn’t fall off the top rope when Cara went for his finisher.
Chavo went to confront Sin Cara after the match. I wanted a cheap shot and an awesome feud but all I got was this T-shirt...I mean a lousy handshake.
Todd Grisham interviewed Teddy Long and asked him whether he thought it was fair that Christian should defend his title. I do. I think it’s awesome.
It’s about time we had more title matches on Raw and SmackDown as it makes the pay-per-views a lot better—The champion is no longer safe until the next month.
Take Christian, for example—I bet everybody expected him to hold on until Over The Limit at the earliest. Now it has been mixed up.
The match between Christian and Randy Orton was actually a brilliant match. It spanned two commercial breaks and showed off the skills of both men. Christian proved in my mind that he can perform in a normal one-on-one match at main event level—I was a little skeptical at first.
So after being doubtful as to whether Christian would look good as a World Champion, I was won over by his stellar performance.
Though it may have been overdubbed, the crowd went wild for Orton’s win, and Christian left the arena with tears in his eyes—his dreams shattered as well as his pride.
Please don’t hesitate to comment on the World title match or any other gripes you had with SmackDown in the comments section below. I am always happy to reply to all comments.
Also, though I’ve never asked before, if you like my writing please become a fan.
I’ll be back on Tuesday with my Raw review.
Thanks for reading!
