WWE: Could a Cross Brand Title Work: The Pro's and Con's of a Cross Brand Title

Josh GMay 6, 2011

There hasn't been a cross-brand title in the WWE since 2002, right before there were separate rosters made for Raw and Smackdown.  Remember how awesome matches were?  Remember how the champions would never run out of opponents?  Well, let's take a look at how WWE could bring back a cross brand title and why it may or may not be a good idea.

Let's look and compare the cross brand title to the single brand titles of today, and look at the history of cross brand titles in the WWE.

Cross brand titles are titles that could be defended on either Raw or Smackdown, rather than just one respective brand, like how it is now.  Cross brand titles could see superstars of different brands fighting for the title, or the same brand the champion is from.  Titles today in WWE (with very rare exceptions, like Extreme Rules) can only be defended by superstars the title is from.

In the beginning of WWE, until 2002 when rosters were created for each separate brand, every title was cross brand.  The WWE Title, Intercontinental Title, Tag Team Titles, Hardcore Title, European Title, you name it and it was cross brand.  Once WWE had bought WCW, more titles were added to WWE, such as the United States Title and the WCW Title.

WWE eventually decided to unify the WWE and WCW Title, creating the Undisputed Championship.

The Intercontinental and United States Title were also unified, and so were the European and Hardcore Titles, which was retired and never came back.

Later on WWE decided to make a separate World Heavyweight Championship for Raw, and use the WWE Championship for Smackdown.  Then the Intercontinental and United States Titles were brought back.

Since then, we've seen lots of great Mid-Card Title matches for both the Intercontinental and United States Title.  Over the past couple of years, however, that has stopped for whatever reason.

We've heard rumors of WWE possibly becoming cross brand again.

What better way for them to test that out than to re-create a cross brand title to be defending on both shows between different brands and superstars?

Why not create a WWE Television Championship?  (I think that would be an appropriate name for it) It could be used to great advantages for WWE and its Superstars, not to mention give us new matches, greater matches, better storylines and a chance to remember what WWE used to be like.

It could be the answer as to how WWE can effectively bring importance back to the Mid-Card Titles.  Instead of having random guys just floating around, why not give them a chance to show off their talent and give everyone a look at how they do as champion.

This could be great to see how worthy and deserving they could be in the future for a world title.

Also, we won't have to see the same match over and over and over (see where I'm going) and over again.  This way, we won't have to see the same title match 100 times in a row. (like Kofi Kingston vs Dolph Ziggler)

What are the negative sides of this?  Are there any?  You could say that there would be, since the champion at the time would have to be on both shows at once.

But then again, that's the case with the Tag Titles right now (which are cross brand, but the Tag Team division is so poor it's so easy to forget) and it appears to be working great.  Not only that, but superstars used to be on each show every week, so why can't they now?

One more con is the fact that you can say this title would take away attention from other titles, or it may just become another unused, unimportant title lost in the WWE Universe.

Well, not necessarily.  This title could be just what the other Mid-Card Titles need to make a comeback to importance!  This title could make more people in WWE see just how important titles should be.

As for possibly becoming another lost and unused title in WWE, I think as long as WWE and the fans have faith it will work.  WWE should keep defending this title every other week or so, like the other Mid-Card Titles used to be.  Make matches and storylines over the title like they used to be.  Put effort into it like there used to be for other titles.

Now how would this title come about?  Should it just be randomly given to someone like the World Heavyweight Title was when it began in WWE back in 2002 to Triple H?  Should there be a match between two random guys to determine who the champion is? Should it be given to someone who isn't going to go anywhere in the future or who will never accomplish anything more?

The simple answer is no.

There should be a tournament made for it.  Have former world champions be included to make the title look important.  Have many hard-fought matches.  Give it to someone who is on track to becoming a world champion in the future, but just isn't quite ready yet.

If the title remains important, this win can help their career later on.

The Mid-Card Titles are in serious lack of importance right now.  It's a shame.  I hope WWE does something to fix it soon.  This idea would help them out quite a bit.

Well, hope you liked this article.  Thanks for reading.  Comment and tell me what you think of this idea!
