Tressel in Trouble: The Scarlet Scandal Has Coach's Future Looking Gray
Below is a picture of the Certificate of Compliance Form signed by Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel, agreeing to comply with school and NCAA officials regarding possible violations within the athletic department. The picture was supplied by SportsbyBrooks and can also be seen here.
As you can see, Tressel signed the document at the beginning of the 2010 season, but failed to uphold what the document stood for.
In the e-mail below the compliance form, Ohio State President Gordon Gee outlined the violations against Tressel to the NCAA. These are the very violations that caused Ohio State to suspend Tressel, along with five violating players, for the first five games of the season. If Tressel had complied with the form he signed, I can imagine Ohio State's season ending quite differently.
Although self-imposed sanctions were placed by Ohio State, Jim Tressel may be headed towards a more serious punishment.
Following the e-mail, you can see a clause in Jim Tressel's contract, signed in 2008, that calls for his termination. Violations made by the head coach are highlighted in the "Termination by Ohio State for Cause," meaning that Tressel's days in Columbus may be extremely numbered.
Ultimately, the decision to risk his job by covering his players will be the end of Jim Tressel as head football coach at Ohio State.
I just have a quick question I would ask the coach when making these choices. Was a Sugar Bowl victory over Ryan Mallett and the Arkansas Razorbacks really worth it, if it costs your job?
