WWE Extreme Rules 2011 Review: May 1, 2011 (Part 2)
The first main event of the night was up next in the form of a ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Alberto Del Rio versus Christian. I thought it would be interesting to see if either of these guys could hold themselves at main event level.
There was plenty of wrestling before the first ladder was involved which is always good to see. It was an excellent match in all fairness—I just think it went on for a little bit too long. One thing I did notice is that Alberto Del Rio is easily the best at executing an enzigiri, whether it be a normal one or one to the top rope.

A ladder was set up between the commentary table and the ring apron early on in the match. Del Rio hit his awesome enzigiri on Christian when he was on top of the rope and Christian landed on the ladder he was holding with a horrendous crack.
Christian gave Del Rio a spear as a tribute to Edge. After many close shaves with the World Heavyweight Championship throughout the match, Del Rio went for an elbow on the situated ladder at ringside and missed Christian. It looked like it hurt and it sounded like it hurt. Christian managed to grab the title after this but Brodus moved the ladder then caught Christian as he fell.
Christian managed to eliminate Brodus but fell victim to the arm-breaker. Just as Del Rio was about to grab the title, Edge showed up and distracted him! This allowed Christian to push him off the ladder onto a really busted open Brodus and his ring announcer. This left the door open for Christian to grab the title.
When I say Brodus was busted open, I mean he was properly busted open—a pool of blood on the floor and everything.
Christian celebrated this momentous victory in the ring with his best friend Edge. It was nice to see, especially after an excellent match. They both proved they can main event a pay-per-view.
There was a break in between main events in the form of a tag team Championship Lumberjack match. Ezekiel Jackson and Wade Barrett took on Big Show and Kane. It was entertaining and in the perfect spot on the pay-per-view.
The highlight of the match was when Kane was thrown out and jumped on. Big Show wasn’t having that and personally took out the Lumberjacks that had committed the offense. Kane was served Tyler Reks and one of the Usos.
Ezekiel slammed the Big Show like he weighed 100 pounds right before Wade lost the match by falling victim to a chokeslam.
A brawl erupted between the LumberJacks after the match ended which was rather pointless but fun to watch nonetheless.
It was then time for the main event—a triple threat cage match between John Cena, John Morrison and The Miz for the WWE Championship.
This was easily the best match of the night. All three performers were excellent and created a very entertaining match. I wasn’t bored once—they put on a fantastic show. I got a bit worried when a double suplex was botched off the top of the cage and Miz landed on his neck but he was OK.
Morrison once again showed that he can easily compete in the main event. He did a multitude of athletic spots, hanging on to the cage, the cage door, jumping off the cage and using the wall of the cage in a matrix like fashion to deliver a kick to Miz.
The excitement factor was higher as people were escaping every two minutes and it was rather tense as no one knew whether the WWE would actually have the guts to put the belt on Morrison.
It just so happened that Truth put a stop to that, by slamming Morrison’s head into the cage door when he was set to win. After taking out Morrison, he then did his finisher on Cena—this left all three men down and Morrison was out for the rest of the match. He then escaped the cage in a symbolic fashion—he would have won technically, had he been in the match.
Just while I’m on the subject of Morrison—it really annoys me the way they call his athletic style hardcore. It’s got to be one of the most irritating things about the commentary. It isn’t hardcore—accept it.
The final spot consisted of Miz and Cena fighting on top of the cage before Miz tried to give Cena a Skull-crushing Finale. Naturally, this was reversed into a perfect Attitude Adjustment form Cena which gave him the win! Cenation will have been up all night celebrating no doubt. I wanted Morrison to win...what? I can hope can’t I?
Now Cena just has to hold the belt until WrestleMania XXVIII for what is set to be an epic encounter no less.
I thought Extreme Rules did extremely well with the card they have. I was thoroughly entertained by all of the matches and it kept me engaged throughout. I would have made the ladder match slightly shorter, but that’s just being picky. All in all, it was a pay-per-view worth buying.
Cody Rhodes should definitely have won his match though. I don’t think I’ll ever forgive WWE or Rey for making Cody lose. Biggest mistake of the night. Please see why Cody should have won here.
What do you think though? Was Extreme Rules good enough for you? What would you have changed? Did everything go your way? Please let me know in the comments section below.
