UFC 129 Fight Results: St-Pierre vs. Shields Prelims Great for Canadians
UFC 129 is well underway, the preliminary fights are done and it looks like the gods of mixed martial arts shone down on the Canadian fighters tonight.
Canadian fighters went 5-2 in the preliminary fights which were airing first on Facebook and then on Spike TV.
The night started off tough for Canadian Yves Jabouin as he fell victim to Pablo Garza's flying triangle choke late in Round 1.
Pablo Garza had the following to say after the fight, "The triangle got him, not the arm bar. He was rolling, but I cranked it very hard. I thought my last fight was a trip, but this was mind-blowing."
Garza went on to discuss the devastating leg kicks Jabouin was throwing earlier in the round, "The leg kicks didn't bother me. I was a little jittery, the biggest crowd I ever fought in front of was a couple thousand. This was like EXPLETIVE and it took a while to concentrate on the fight."
It was a tough fight for Jabouin, he looked good early, but Garza pulled off what could be the Submission of the Night. At least he is hoping he is getting the bonus.
"I saw the Makdessi KO and it was awesome. I hope all the fights the rest of the night are KOs because I want that Sub bonus," said Garza.
Afterwards, Tristar gym product John Makdessi went up against The Ultimate Fighter alumni Kyle Watson.
The first two rounds went 10-9 in Makdessi's favor on the judges score cards, but there was no reason to go to decision.
Makdessi got the Canadians in the win column with a devastating spinning back fist that was reminiscent of the one Shonie Carter landed on Matt Serra some time ago.
UFC president Dana White tweeted that Makdessi won the Knockout of the Night and Makdessi responded, "This is going to change my life."
Makdessi is a relative rookie to the UFC, but the next Canadian fighter on the card Jason MacDonald is a grizzled veteran and was coming back from a badly broken leg to fight Ryan Jensen.
MacDonald's leg wasn't bothering him much tonight as he used it to lock up a beautiful triangle choke submission against his opponent Jensen who was forced to tap.
MacDonald was ecstatic with the comeback, "Words can't describe what I'm feeling right now. I had the triangle locked in and I knew he [Ryan Jensen] was going to slam me. I knew as long I kept him tight it would be no problem."
The win column kept stacking up for the Canadians as Ivan Menjivar, another product of Montreal's Tristar gym, got the technical knockout against former WEC fighter Charlie Velencia.
Menjivar made quick work of Valencia who didn't have much on the Canadian.
For win No. 4 on the night for the Canadians, Claude Patrick took out Daniel Roberts in a hard fought war of attrition with the judges scoring the fight in Patrick's favor.
To round out the prelims, Canadian Sean Pierson unfortunately lost at the hands of Jake Ellenberger in what was a devastating knockout. Finally, Vancouver's own Rory MacDonald simply dominated Ultimate Figther alumni Nate Diaz for three rounds, MacDonald took Diaz for a ride by landing three consecutive belly to back supplexes.
Unfortunately, Mark Bocek lost the first main card fight to former WEC champion Ben Henderson.
The energy in Rogers center is electric, who knows what it will be like come the main event: Georges St-Pierre vs Jake Shields.
