UFC 129: What Should Georges St-Pierre Do If He Loses To Jake Shields?
George St-Pierre hasn't lost a fight since April of 2007 and honestly, he's not even been close to tasting defeat since. GSP has won eight fights in a row and although a majority of them have been by decision, it doesn't change the fact that they have been dominating performances by the champ.
Unlike his last opponents in the octagon, though, Jake Shields brings in a longer and arguably more impressive win streak with him to their fight.
Shields has won 15 fights in a row and defeated men at both the 170-pound division as well as the 185-pound division including former UFC Middleweight Championship contender and current Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Dan Henderson.
In my opinion, this is the fight Jake has been waiting on and I don't see him letting it slip by. But this article isn't about my opinion on the fight itself, it's on the aftermath. Say Jake Shields defeats GSP at UFC 129...then what for GSP?
All we hear people talk about his this superfight between St-Pierre and Anderson Silva IF GSP gets by Shields. Well, if he don't, what does he do? I mean, the whole reason the superfight is such a possibility is because if St-Pierre defeats Shields, there isn't anybody left for him to beat in the UFC welterweight division; so, if he loses, there is nobody he can face in a title eliminator match.
So do we just grant GSP an immediate rematch? He has been champion for a long time so it would kind of only be right, but say he wins...we're right back at square one.
So, how about the idea of GSP losing to Shields and then jumping up to the Middleweight division. He's said in the past that he doesn't like the idea of his first middleweight bout being against Silva, so this might work out in his favor.
He can fight maybe once or twice to get a good feel for the 185 weight-class and then, if he wins both fights, challenge Anderson Silva. Heck, Dana can even treat the fans to a couple other superfights such as GSP vs. Wanderlei Silva or even GSP vs. Chael Sonnen.
The whole idea of GSP staying in the welterweight division after this fight at UFC 129, no matter whether he wins or loses, doesn't make too much sense. He truly has cleaned out the division if he defeats Shields and, really, he has nothing to gain if he loses to Shields then proceeds to challenge for an immediate rematch.
I think we all agree that Geroges St-Pierre is one of the best mixed martial artist of all-time, but before I call him the best, I want to see him challenge himself; which is something, in my opinion, he's not done yet.
A jump to the middleweight division would be that challenge for St-Pierre. No matter the outcome of the fight between St-Pierre and Shields at UFC 129, I believe we've seen the last of GSP at welterweight and it could be about time for the UFC middleweight division to get ready for the arrival of GSP.
