WWE Extreme Rules: Why John Morrison Will Win the Triple Threat Steel Cage Match

Carrie DunnApr 28, 2011

I have a funny feeling that there will be an upset in the cards at Extreme Rules in the main event. John Morrison really could emerge as WWE champion. I mean it.

After the will-he-won't-he shenanigans, John Morrison is on the card, winning R-Truth's spot from him in the most bizarre element of Raw in London. First things first: If all WWE needed was a jobber to make up the numbers, R-Truth could've just stayed in the lineup. The twist with Morrison sneaking the place must surely mean there are bigger plans for him.

I'm not saying the event has been thought through brilliantly. The whole steel cage aspect was only mentioned by the Miz in his (excellent) in-ring promo last week, indicating it's a fairly recent addition to the angle. Nevertheless, Morrison's equally late presence in the match shows there's something more to it than there would have been had R-Truth been there.

When Miz was on commentary during the five-man gauntlet match, he was certainly playing up the anti-Morrison talk. I wondered then if this was groundwork for an imminent feud between the former tag-team partners. If Morrison were to win Miz's belt from him—the belt that he wears oh-so-proudly—then the feud would kick off properly.

Should Morrison take the title, it wouldn't necessarily be a particularly long reign. For starters, he needs a lot of work on his character; the Dirt Sheet-era JoMo is well and truly hidden now, and whenever he's left to ad lib it's painful.

Meanwhile, Miz seems to be groomed to take over as the face of the WWE (we've had him on kids shows over here in the UK) and a figurehead without a title is pretty pointless. But giving him someone new to have a storyline with would help him out in the long run.

Of course, there's John Cena to consider, but his position in the company doesn't alter whether he has the title or not, and he'll have ages to win it back before next year's WrestleMania, so WWE might as well hand the title over to a new man and see where they can go from there.
