UFC 129 Fight Card: Can Jake Shields, Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsui Make a Clean Sweep
The Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsui camp will have a large contingent of fighters present at UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields, as members Jake Shields, Nate Diaz and Daniel Roberts are all scheduled to fight.
But, while the leader of the crew, Cesar Gracie himself, will be watching back in California due to passport issues, his flag will be on full display.
How will the three come out inside the Rogers Centre? Let's take a look:
Daniel Roberts vs. Claude Patrick
1 of 4
First up will be Daniel Roberts, a 30-year-old veteran of the sport, going up against Claude Patrick in a prelim fight that will be broadcast on Facebook.
Roberts, 12-1 in his career, has claimed three consecutive victories as a UFC fighter, including a pair of submission wins against Greg Soto and Mike Guymon.
Patrick will have the backing of the crowd, as he hails from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is 13-1 in his career, with 12 straight wins, the past two coming in the UFC.
This welterweight contest could produce a challenger in the winner, as both have been on quite a roll since joining company. Roberts, a master of karate, judo and boxing, will need to avoid Patrick's guillotine choke, which he has used to win six bouts, to start the Gracie camp on the right foot.
Nate Diaz vs. Rory MacDonald
2 of 4
Next up for the Gracie camp will be Nate Diaz, who takes on Rory MacDonald in a fight set to broadcast on Spike TV.
Diaz, the brother of Strikeforce champion Nick, sports a career record of 13-6, but is just 3-4 in his last seven. The less outspoken of the Diaz brothers, Nate is a brown belt in Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsui.
MacDonald is 10-1 and coming off his first professional loss against Carlos Condit at UFC 115. MacDonald has never went to a decision, winning six fights by submission.
For anyone that questions why Diaz is still in the UFC, they only need to sit down and watch a battle with him involved. Four times he has been part of the Fight of the Night, winning two of them.
With so much at stake for his teammates, and the kind of momentum built by his brother and Gilbert Melendez earlier this year, look for Diaz to find a way to handle MacDonald.
Jake Shields vs. Georges St. Pierre
3 of 4
The most important fight of the night that involves a Gracie camp competitor will be the main event, as Jake Shields meets Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title.
Shields, a former champion in Elite XC, Shooto and Strikeforce, is 26-4 in his career, with wins in 15 straight bouts. Including in that run are victories over Dan Henderson, Martin Kampmann, Jason Miller, Robbie Lawler and Paul Daley.
The pride of Mountain Ranch, California, Shields brings many different aspects of the game to the cage, as he has finished fights by several variations of submissions.
His opponent, GSP, is regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound cage fighter in the world and will be the heavy favorite entering Saturday night. St. Pierre will also have the crowd behind him, as he is a native of Canada.
