WWE: Should It Consider Revisiting the Cruiserweight/Lightweight Division?

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 27, 2011

This is a topic that has always been talked about on Bleacher Report. Sometimes we go awhile without anyone mentioning the Cruiserweight and Lightweight divisions, but it always comes back. There is a good reason why that is.

WWE retired its Cruiserweight title after it was held by Hornswoggle.  Before the pint-sized brawler held the belt it was mostly held by Gregory Helms and Chavo Guerrero for the last year or so before it was retired.

The reason people always bring up the defunct division is because the matches put on by the wrestlers in the division were always exciting, albeit short for the most part.

Guys like Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho, Chavo, both Hardy brothers and many others have used the Cruiserweight or Lightweight titles as a stepping stone to go on to greater things.

Back in the nineties, the concept of a small guy holding the World Title seemed far fetched in the world of big men, but in the last ten to twelve years we have seen a change in that way of thinking.

Guys who used to be relegated to the "small guy" division were starting to make great strides in the wrestling industry.  Some could even go as far back as Shawn Michaels as a sign that former bodybuilders and football players were not the only ones with the ability to become stars in the world of wrestling.

Vince McMahon has made a career out of pushing guys who look like they spend all day in the gym pumping iron, but he has had to change his way of thinking since guys can't juice up anymore.

WCW is credited with bringing exciting Cruiserweight action to the United States, but ECW was actually featuring Mysterio, Guerrero and Malenko before Ted Turner and Eric Bischoff got their greedy little hands on its talents.

WWE likes to take its small guys and put them in David vs. Goliath situations because fans love to root for the underdog, but they have to notice that whenever they throw two guys who can fly around the ring together, the fans get on their feet.

Last year, there was a match between Evan Bourne and Rey Mysterio on Raw that brought the house down.  Their high flying moves and ariel assaults made for the most exciting and jaw-dropping match of the night.

On Raw this past Monday, we saw about three seconds of an exchange between Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne that had fans cheering loud because in that short span of time, they had a quick exchange that was exciting and fast paced.

There are so many guys in WWE who would benefit so much from the reinstating of this division. Just to run down a quick list, there is Evan Bourne, Kofi, Daniel Bryan, Primo, Yoshi Tatsu, Justin Gabriel, Sin Cara, Chavo, Tyson Kidd, Cody Rhodes and both Usos.  These men could all shine in matches with similar sized opponents.

I am all for the little guy going over the big guy, but at some point the WWE has to realize they are, to quote Zack Ryder, missing the boat.

Who else wants to see the Cruiserweight/Lightweight division?
