UFC 129 Fight Card: Randy Couture Doesn't See Jon Jones in His Future
Yesterday, Cage Potato touched on the possibility of Randy Couture not being too quick to follow through with his plans to retire after his UFC 129 bout with Lyoto Machida this Saturday.
While an interview with Steve Cofield seems to suggest that he still will retire, even if he earns a decisive win over Machida, some still feel that it is not yet that time, and further justifying that are comments he made yesterday.
“It doesn’t matter if I win or not,” Couture sort of snaps. “I know them, I know Dana. He’s got plans already and it doesn’t matter to me. He’s going to really have to step up if he thinks I’m going to come back out (of retirement). I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Dana White has known to "step up" when it comes to organizing certain fights, but who can "El Capo de UFC" offer Couture that could easily justify a "postponing", per se, of The Natural's retirement?
Couture said that the answer would've been Jon Jones, but the response seemed a little different from what the response to Machida was.
". There’s a lot of younger guys … Jon Jones is the perfect example. They offered me that fight in the fall. Nobody wants to fight that cat right now. I don’t see that battle in my future."
Maybe he doesn't, but are there any other options for Couture, if not Jones?
“What, they’re gonna offer me a 10-fight deal? I don’t know what they’re going to offer me. It’s not about titles, it’s not about belts. I’ve done everything there is to do in this sport and I’ve had a blast (during) the 14 years I’ve been doing it. I think now is the time to move on.”
Couture seems serious about it this time, but he sounded serious about retirement after he lost to Chuck Liddell, and he came back a year and one month later to beat Tim Sylvia in a five-round bout that was not even close.
It will be interesting to see if Couture really does call it a career regardless of what happens this Saturday in Toronto.
