UFC News: Jon Jones Explains His Injury That Forced Him off UFC 133 Title Bout

Mike HodgesApr 25, 2011

Following the announcement earlier on Monday, confirming that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was forced to withdraw from his title bout versus Rashad Evans, Jones explained the extent of his injury to Authentic Sport Management, courtesy of Bloodyelbow.com.

"The torn tissue in my right hand in the area between my thumb and forefinger is an injury that’s been recurring since I was a college wrestler, it doesn’t affect my punching or grappling, but I am taking the time and the proper measures to correct this now, so that it doesn’t happen again," Jones said.

Although the timetable for his return is undetermined at this point, Jones remains positive.

"I look forward to getting back to training and to my first title defense."

Bloodyelbow.com also reports that Jones' original opponent, Evans, also spoke to Authentic Sport Management and commented on Phil Davis, the man who has stepped in to replace Jones at UFC 133.

"I’m looking forward to fighting Phil Davis (Aug. 6) at UFC 133, he’s a strong wrestler and a rising star in the light heavyweight division."

As for the champion, Evans said he expects Jones to be fully recovered when they collide.

"I wish Jon Jones a speedy recovery, he has something that belongs to me and when he’s ready, I’ll be waiting," Evans said.

UFC 133 is scheduled for Aug. 6 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This anticipated bout has now been added to an action-packed card that already features Vitor Belfort versus Yoshihiro Akiyama, along with Rich Franklin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira prepared to square off in a light heavyweight matchup.
