College Football Predictions 2011: 11 Conferences, 11 Champions
With school almost out, the summer training programs will soon be under way.
Then once training camp beings, virtually every media outlet on the local, regional and national levels will be making predictions.
So, let's get ahead of the curve and make some predictions of our own.
Barring any injuries, chances are not much will change between now and kickoff.
Therefore, here are all your 11 FBS conference champions.
ACC: Florida State Seminoles
1 of 11
2010 RECORD: 10-4 (6-3)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 16
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: ACC runner-up after losing 44-33 to Virginia Tech in the title game.
Despite the loss of QB Christian Ponder, E.J. Manuel is very capable of leading the Seminoles.
Not to mention the receiving core of Bert Reed, Willie Haulstead, Taiwan Easterling, and Rodney Smith are very experienced (each had at least 30 catches in 2010).
On the dark side, coach Jimbo Fisher sees the return of DE Brandon Jenkins (13.5 sacks), OLB Nigel Bradham (98 tackles, five sacks), and CBs Greg Reid and Xavier Rhodes (33 combined pass deflects and seven picks).
Not to mention, a top-notch recruiting class.
Big 12: Oklahoma Sooners
2 of 11
2010 RECORD: 12-2 (7-2)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 6
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Won the Big 12 title game 23-20 over Nebraska.
With QB Landry Jones and WR Ryan Broyles returning in 2011, the Oklahoma offense will once again be very dangerous.
The loss of RB DeMarco Murray will be tough, but the Sooners are known for reloading in the backfield.
On the defense however, DE Fran Alexander (seven sacks), OLB Travis Lewis (109 tackles, three picks), and CB Jamell Fleming (five picks, 14 pass break-ups) all come back.
Add in another sweet recruiting class, and coach Bob Stoops is thinking national championship.
Big East: West Virginia Mountaineers
3 of 11
2010 RECORD: 9-4 (5-2)
2010 FINAL RANKING: NA
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Big East runner-up because of the 16-13 OT loss to Connecticut in Week 8.
In 2011, the Mountaineers return a lot of talent, and are poised for a run at the conference title.
They'll have QB Geno Smith (over 2,700 yards passing and 24 TDs), WR/RB Tavon Austin (58 receptions, eight TDs), DEs Bruce Irvin and Julian Miller (combined for 23 sacks) and CB Keith Tandy (led Big East with six picks).
Not to mention, they get conference contenders Connecticut and Pittsburgh at home.
Big Ten: Michigan State Spartans
4 of 11
2010 RECORD: 11-2 (7-1)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 14
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Co-Big Ten champion along with Wisconsin and Ohio State.
Offensively, Sparty has a lot returning, most notably with QB Kirk Cousins, RB Edwin Baker, and WR B.J. Cunningham.
Defensively, Michigan State loses two-time All-American and team MVP LB Greg Jones, along with his trusty sidekick LB Eric Gordon.
However, there is more depth at the defensive line, as well as two secondary starters coming back (Trenton Robinson and Johnny Adams).
Conference USA: UCF Knights
5 of 11
2010 RECORD: 11-3 (8-1)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 20
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Won Conference USA title game 17-7 over SMU.
The Knights lose more on defense with SS Reggie Weams, OLB Derrick Hallman and OLB Bruce Miller gone to the NFL draft.
But, DE Darius Nall comes off a great season with 8.5 sacks and 14 QB hits.
With the ball, dual threat QB Jeffrey Godfrey (2,700 total yards, 22 TDs), and RBs Ronnie Weaver and Latavius Murray (22 combined TDs) will be exciting to watch.
MAC: Northern Illinois Huskies
6 of 11
2010 RECORD: 11-3 (8-1)
2010 FINAL RANKING: NA
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: MAC runner-up after losing 26-21 to Miami (Ohio) in the title game.
Once again the Huskies could contend for a MAC title as double duty QB Chandler Harnish is back (over 3,000 total yards, 28 TDs).
The defense however, does lose some talent in Alex Kube, Jake Coffman, and Chris Smith.
But, Tyrone Clark, Devon Butler, and Sean Proger are back for another go.
Mountain West: Boise State Broncos
7 of 11
2010 RECORD: 12-1 (7-1)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 7
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Finished second in the WAC after losing 34-31 to Nevada in overtime.
Under center, QB Kellen Moore is back for his senior season after a sensational 2010 campaign.
Then, in the backfield, RB Doug Martin joins Moore to lead the offense.
The Broncos defense takes a hit in losing SS Jeron Johnson and CB Brandyn Thompson to the NFL draft.
However, look for DEs Shea McClellin and Tyron Crawford (combined for 20.5 sacks) to add more pressure to the QB, as well as maintaining the rush defense.
Pac-12: Oregon Ducks
8 of 11
2010 RECORD: 12-1 (9-0)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 3
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Won the Pac-10 after going unbeaten in the regular season.
For as good as the Ducks were on offense in 2010, they actually could be better in 2011.
In having experience, players like QB Darron Thomas and RB LaMichael James are now seasoned veterans.
Move to the defense and we see CB Cliff Harris back in the secondary with FS John Boyett.
Both combined for 11 picks and 37 pass break-ups, not to mention Harris is arguably the best return man in all the land.
SEC: South Carolina Gamecocks
9 of 11
2010 RECORD: 9-5 (5-4)
2010 FINAL RANKING: No. 22
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: SEC runner-up after losing 56-17 to Auburn in the title game.
Fans of the SEC will most likely disagree, but South Carolina has a lot returning in 2010 in addition to the No. 1 recruit coming in (for a second consecutive season).
They'll have RB Marcus Lattimore, WR Alshon Jeffery and QB Stephen Garcia (still need him despite offseason issues).
Then they have No. 1 recruit Jadeveon Clowney aside fellow sack-masters Melvin Ingram and Devin Harris (combined for 17 sacks).
Also, CB Stephon Gilmore is back after leading the team with 79 tackles and three picks.
Sun Belt: Troy Trojans
10 of 11
2010 RECORD: 8-5 (6-2)
2010 FINAL RANKING: NA
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Sun Belt runner-up after losing 52-35 to Florida International in the regular season.
After a solid 2010 campaign, the Troy Trojans ended it with a dominating 48-21 win over the Ohio Bobcats in the New Orleans Bowl.
What's interesting here was the play of QB Corey Robinson who threw for over 3,700 yards and 28 TDs, as a freshman.
Defending the end-zone, we see the return of ILB Xavier Lamb (led team with 91 tackles) and DE Jonathan Massaquoi (13.5 sacks).
WAC: Hawaii Warriors
11 of 11
2010 RECORD: 10-4 (7-1)
2010 FINAL RANKING: NA
2010 CONFERENCE TURNOUT: Finished third in the WAC behind Boise State and Nevada.
Vili Fehoko and the Warrior faithful must be very excited about the 2011 season with Boise State and Nevada now in the Mountain West.
In any event, Hawaii should ease their way to another WAC title behind the right arm of QB Bryant Moniz (5,040 yards, 39 TDs).
The defensive leaders will be OLBs Corey Paredes (151 tackles, four picks, nine pass deflects) and Aaron Brown (83 tackles, five sacks, three picks, nine pass deflects).
