UFC News: Phil Davis Plans to Take Time off and Adjust

Mike HodgesApr 18, 2011

Following his lackluster win over former Pride FC star Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, UFC light-heavyweight prospect Phil Davis will look to go back to the drawing board before he intends to return.

Davis, who is 5-0 in the UFC, told MMAJunkie.com that improving his skills is necessary at this point in his career.

"I really want to make some huge gains inside the gym, before I step back in," Davis said.

And it is those huge gains Davis will certainly want to work on, as his most recent performance earned him more criticism than praise.

Against Nogueira, Davis used his striking ability to setup the take down on his opponent, but rarely did he manage any success.

The win for Davis brought upon more questions for the NCAA Division 1 wrestler, as he was faced with a setback. Prior to the bout, many critics were hailing Davis as the man to defeat newly crowned light-heavyweight champion, Jon Jones.

But Davis will be the first to admit that he is still relatively new to mixed martial arts and he still has a lot to learn.

"I've admitted: Yeah, I'm green," Davis joked.

And while he might be undefeated thus far in his young career, Davis is content with what he has accomplished so far, despite not earning a dominating win over his last opponent.

"I'm satisfied," Davis admitted.

"I knew this one would be a big one, but more than anything, I'm just glad to compete against a guy that i respected and looked up to for so long."
