WWE: The 5 Best Current Superstars You Could Include in a Gauntlet Match

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

Last week's episode of RAW included a five-man gauntlet match to determine who would face The Miz for the WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. In the end, two of the men, R-Truth and John Cena, were both given the spot, making the match that of the triple-threat variety.

The participants in the match all made sense for RAW at the present time (except for R-Truth). However, it makes it a lot more fun to think in hypotheticals. What would be the absolute best that the WWE could give us right now?

This could have been expanded into an all-time gauntlet, but there are way too many superstars over many generations to put into just five spots. Instead, I narrowed the discussion to current WWE superstars. While I would have loved to put Shawn Michaels and Edge on there, they are both retired.

Chris Jericho would have been perfect, but he is off doing ballroom dancing for a little while longer. There is also The Undertaker, whom I have left off of this dream gauntlet. While he is a legend unlike any other, he does have injuries that will keep him off television for most of this year. Even though we are speaking hypothetically here, I wouldn't want to see The Undertaker less than 100 percent, which he isn't at this point in his career.

The Big Show

I would love to see The Big Show start this gauntlet match. His menacing size and ability to do things that many big men in WWE's history could not do would make him ideal for this matchup.

Also, if there was one guy who could destroy four of the best in the business and survive it would be either this guy or his opponent to begin...

John Cena

2 of 5

I can hear the anti-Cena comments being typed already.

Like it or not, John Cena is one of the best that this business has to offer right now. Cena constantly tries to change and add to his moves more often than he changes the color of his t-shirt. Cena vs. Big Show would be a nice thing to see since we haven't seen it in a while (two years is a while in WWE time).

We all know how this would end, though. Cena will battle back and hit an Attitude Adjustment on the big man, which will still impress all of us. The Big Show is a big dude and lifting him on your shoulders is as impressive as it was when Cena did it the first time at WrestleMania XX.

Triple H

The Game may not be seen very often on WWE TV anymore, but he is still a part of the regular roster and qualifies. Cena taking on HHH would not be new either, but then again hardly anything is anymore. These two faced off in a high-quality feud back in 2006 that led to a match at WrestleMania 22. A lot of the Cena hatred developed right after that, but this would be a good matchup of the Golden Boy of the WWE and the man who helps write the script.

While it might not go that way, I think Triple H would need the win more than Cena in order to show that he is still that dominant and is still relevant in the WWE as a performer.

Anti-Cena fans can rejoice all they like, but it isn't because it is Cena. It is because HHH would need at least one fall in the gauntlet more.

Randy Orton

The Game and The Viper would then square off in the gauntlet with neither of them being a part of the first two. That's the funny thing about many of these gauntlet matches. They are talked about like the guys who start have to outlast all of these men, and they rarely actually do. In fact, R-Truth was the only man in last week's gauntlet that actually defeated more than one man.

Randy Orton was one of the first two men on last Monday's gauntlet with Dolph Ziggler, but was taken out of the equation by the return of the New Nexus. In this scenario, Orton would come out fourth to take on Triple H. These two have one of the longest and most storied rivalries of the last 10 years, dating back to Orton's first world title reign and banishment from Evolution. It has been long enough that we haven't seen these two one-on-one that it wouldn't be stale. Besides, Cena may have survived to just avoid Orton/Cena Round 2,084.

Would I dare project Triple H to beat the two darlings of WWE, Orton and Cena, in one night? I would. Like I said, Triple H needs it more than those two do. They will live to fight another day, but the days for The King of Kings are numbered. Those two victories feed right into the legend that is The Cerebral Assassin.

The Miz

5 of 5

AWWWWEEESSSOOOMMMEEEE.....

The same logic as to why The Miz comes out last is the same logic as to why John Cena came out last on RAW last Monday night. The commentators can say all they want about how Cena "got the luck of the draw," but The Miz is the one superstar, believe it or not, that is over the most. Between the absolute hatred or the Miz marks (often called Mizfits), The Miz receives one of the top reactions in the entire WWE. He is also the only true heel of the group, as well as the only current world champion. Translation: he comes out whenever he wants.

I also put him here for the fact of facing him against Triple H for the first time. Every other situation between these five has happened except for this one. The Miz is a rising star, while Triple H could be in the Hall of Fame tomorrow if he retired today.

Triple H is also in the twilight of his career and The Miz is hitting his stride. Three straight may be too much for The Game, especially with The Miz up to his old tricks. The Miz would win this gauntlet and take all of the credit for it. Would we want it any other way? You tell me.

In the comments, pick your five for a dream gauntlet match. Try to keep it to the current roster to make it more interesting. Tell me who faces who and who wins it all. Lots of details are not required but would be encouraged.
