Victor Ortiz Beats Andre Berto: 5 Hyped Guys Who'll Never Amount to Anything
On Saturday night, boxing fans everywhere witnessed what will potentially become the 2011 fight of the year when Victor Ortiz upset the over-hyped Andre Berto on HBO.
Berto was considered by most boxing experts to be the third-best welterweight in the world only below worldwide sensations Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. After being knocked down twice by Vicious Ortiz and ultimately losing a unanimous decision, he now joins a long list of over-hyped boxers hoping for a big payday against the world’s best in the business.
Featured in this slideshow are a handful of fighters just like Berto who are currently over-hyped but will eventually be exposed.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Middleweight

Chavez Jr. is a boxing promoter’s dream. He has an impressive undefeated record, a likable personality, and his trainer is the legendary Freddie Roach. It also helps that his dad is a boxing legend.
Unfortunately, Jr. wasn’t born with even half the talent his dad has, and he is continuously matched against safe opponents. Roach may be one heck of a trainer, but he’s not a genie. He can’t wave a wand and suddenly bless fighters with talent they weren’t born with.
Alexander Povetkin, Heavyweight

Povetkin is mostly hyped-up because his trainer is popular ESPN boxing commentator and Mike Tyson’s assistant trainer, Teddy Atlas. With Povetkin’s God-given talent, it’s no wonder why Atlas has taken so much interest in him.
On the negative side, his heart and dedication has to be questioned. For an up-and-coming fighter, he doesn’t fight anywhere near enough. In addition, he was offered to fight Wladimir Klitschko a few years ago, but Atlas advised him not to.
I wonder why…
Andre Dirrell, Super Middleweight

Dirrell is the one guy I didn’t want to put on this list. I believe he has always had all of the talent and heart to become a boxing superstar. Sadly, he was hit with a brutal shot to the back of the head by Arthur Abraham in March of last year which put his career to a halt.
He still insists on making a comeback someday, but I don’t see it happening. The hit and the entire situation reminds me too much of the once over-hyped Heavyweight Joe Mesi who suffered a subdural hematoma and was never the same again.
Tom Zbikowski, Heavyweight

Zibikowski is a joke, and I honestly have a hard time even calling him a boxer. Maybe 10 years ago if he would have committed himself to the sport full-time he could have eventually been a superstar, but it’s too late now.
There’s no way he’ll ever amount to anything as a professional fighter when he’s already 26 years old with only three pro fights. Not to mention he thinks he can still play football and just do the whole boxing thing on the side.
Maybe he can beat the occasional scrub, but I’d hate to think of what a legit contender would do to him. Things would get ugly.

You may notice one guy not listed here is Juan Manuel Lopez who also lost his first professional fight on Saturday night.
Even though it was to Orlando Salido via stoppage, I believe the referee ended it prematurely and Lopez will learn more in this fight than any of his previous wins combined. He was also very distracted during training camp due to personal problems involving a divorce from his wife.
He’ll return to dominance soon.
