The Top 5 Most Awe-Inspiring Moments in the Sports World

Washington's BulletApr 23, 2011

You know that moment where a player goes up for a layup and all of the sudden, from out of nowhere, Dwight Howard rises up and blocks the shot with such violent, earth-shattering power that it flies into the 16th row, hitting some guy who is carrying four beers directly in the jaw, forcing him to splatter a gallon of beer all over the two extremely well-endowed bombshells sitting row in front of him?

They erotically shake the golden beer out of their hair as Dwight Howard, who is ecstatic from the monstrous block, has the unyielding look of global domination on his face.

You know that moment?

This is a ranking of the top five awe-inspiring moments in sports.

Since this is only a top-five list, and it is not limited to any specific sport, many grandiose moments have been left off of the list.

Runners-up include the ninth-inning Grand Slam, the rib-collapsing sack, the hail-mary as time expires, the hole in one and the aforementioned blocked shot that towers into the 25th row.

No. 5: Running Back a Kickoff

Watching a return man like Joshua Cribbs, Rick Upchurch and Devin Hester go to work on a defense is a thing on magic.

A great block and a beautiful juke being followed by an embarrassing stiff-arm to the punter is one of the finest moments in the NFL and in all of sports.

No. 4: Striking Out the Side

I wasn't sure whether to include this since it is not technically a "moment" but a longer period of time.

Walking off of the mound, however, after outsmarting some of the best hitters in the world is one of the best moments in MLB.

No. 3: Knocking Out an Opponent

3 of 5

Man vs. man.

Primitive genius.

It is so simple that it is jaw-smashingly brilliant.

What could be more thrilling than throwing an uppercut that lands directly on an opponent's chin as the crowd goes insane and the referee counts to one?

I can only think of two things.

No. 2: Getting into the Pipe

4 of 5

Surfing inside of a pipe is considered by many the most intimate moment man can have with mother nature.

It is epically and profoundly beautiful while at the same time potentially life threatening.

The sun is eclipsed; the ocean channels its unlimited power into a perfect, mathematical aesthetic.

Some find it so entrancing that they never come out.

No. 1: Slam Dunk over an Opponent and Shattering the Backboard

5 of 5

This moment has it all.

Extremely rare.  Check.

Incomparable athletic prowess.  Check.

Totally humiliating an opponent.  Check.

Simultaneously dropping 14,000 jaws to the floor.  Check.

Shattering the backboard literally ends the game.

Modern technology has seemingly solved this problem.  Occasionally Shaq will pull down a basket or Dwight Howard will knock over the shot clock, but this moment is rarely seen anymore.

It has become legendary.
