MLB April Fools: Teams That Are Trying To Prank Us Early This Season

Grant GilleyApr 12, 2011

The MLB season is early, but some teams are screwing up our predictions for division winners. Maybe these teams are tired of no one paying them any attention and wanted to some glory early this season. Maybe some teams forgot that were not in spring training anymore (Boston.) But what ever the case may be, I am not fooled, I know who will be playing in October.

Here is this years biggest pranksters.

7. Cleveland Indians

Holy Asdrubal Cabrera! For the first two games of the season the Indians were who we thought they were, losers. Since losing their opening series to the White Sox the Indians have reeled off eight straight games and now sit atop the AL Central.

The Indians have swept the Red Sox and the Mariners so far, and are looking to win their current series in Anaheim. This can't last, this won't last. The Tribe took advantage of a Boston team suffering an identity crisis an were able to eek out two wins in Seattle.

The AL Central crown will go through Chicago, Detroit or Minnesota, but thanks for showing up early Cleveland.

6. Baltimore Orioles

The "Fightin' Showalters" are looking good early this year. I mean you've got to be good to be sitting atop the AL East, one of the toughest division in baseball. Alright, I lied, you don't have to be good to be sitting atop the AL East right now. The Orioles have lucked into first place because the Yankees and Red Sox are playing like the Orioles should be playing, bad.

Buck Showalter has turned this team around and they have enough young talent (Wieters and Jones) and veteran leads (Roberts and D. Lee) to build on their 66 wins from last year, but sooner or later Baltimore will be resting in their comfort zone at the bottom of the AL East.

5. Texas Rangers

The Rangers make this list because the 2010 AL MVP Josh Hamilton, will be out for at least two months after breaking his right arm sliding headfirst into home in Detroit. Texas started off the season red-hot defending their 2010 AL Championship and were looking to find themselves defending their crown in October.

I still believe the Rangers will find themselves playing in October but the race in the AL West just got a lot closer. The Angels and A's will look to make up ground in the division while Hamilton is out and the Rangers will hope David Murphy continues to play consistent baseball while Hamilton is out.

The Braves were a popular pick to unseat the aging Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East this year. Well ten games in the Braves are 4-6 after suffering series losses to Milwaukee Brewers and Phillies. The good news for the Braves is they are just ten games in and Dan Uggla has yet to start put the numbers Braves fans were used to see him putting up while playing for the Florida Marlins.

I still like the Braves to unseat the Phillies as long as they don't lose 9 in a row like they did last April. The pitching staff is loaded and will be ready to K.O. the Phillies come September when injured Kris Medlen returns to the roster and Julio Teheran gets the call to report to the big leagues.

3. St. Louis Cardinals

Earth to Albert! Earth to Albert! WAKE UP! You are the face of this franchise, you are the face of MLB and you lead your team in 0 offensive categories. Come on Albert, if you don't play up to your potential nobody is going to want you when you hit the free agent market this off season, nobody.

Okay so while I am kidding about the worth of the hottest free agent of this coming off season, I am not kidding about him waking up. Seriously, the Red Birds are 5th in the NL Central. The only good news for them is that their division has 6 teams. I want to see the Cardinals and Reds fight it out for the NL Central crown this summer. I want to see Pujols and Votto duke it out like McGwire and Sosa did in the 90's, but this time no steroids or cork in the lumber. Time for someone to wake up the sleeping giant.

2. San Francisco Giants

Whats wrong with the Giants? Still hungover from November? Too busy trying to figure out what that thing is on Brian Wilson's face? Worried about the Barry Bonds trial? Well they're sitting dead last in their division and they've got the best team in the division.

The World Champions need to regain their October form sometime this season if they want to let Rookie of the Year candidate Brandon Belt to experience what they experienced last year. The Giants have talent everywhere and Tim Lincecum and company will return to form. Hangovers eventually end, whatever that is on Brian Wilson's face isn't contagious and Barry Bonds is in hot water. So with those questions answered, time to get back to work champs.

1. Boston Red Sox

When you spend $163 million on a team, you kind of hope they don't suck... Boston sucks. So far Boston has paid Carl Crawford $15 million for a .152 batting average and 8 strike outs. Daisuke Matsuzaka and his $10 million have gone 7 innings in 2 games with an e.r.a. way north of 10. Out of all the teams on this list, Boston worries me the most. You're supposed to win with Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester and John Lackey.

I saw the Red Sox fighting it out with the Yankees for the AL East crown but right now Boston needs to figure out a way to fight themselves out of this huge brown bag they seem to be trapped in. If Boston doesn't start winning soon, I suggest they hand over their payroll to Congress so the government can stay in business.
